If you're referring to the outside mirrors, they are the same but you'll have to add a right side mirror for the e12 based car and the electrical harness.

I'm not exactly clear on what you're trying to do.
If you're referring to e24s only then the mirrors are interchangeable between the e12 and e28 based cars.
If you're referring to transferring a e24 mirror to a e28 (5-series) then I'm not sure if the mirrors are interchangeable.

E24 (E12 or E28 based chassis) mirrors surely won't fit an E28 body. The angle of the A-pillar is much more vertical on the E28.

I wanted to to the chrome swap that people do to their e28's by putting e12 mirrors on. I just wanted to know if i could use e24 mirrors rather than e12 mirrors

I basically wanted to do the chrome mirror swap. People swap e12 mirrors on e28. I can't get my hands on e12 mirrors so i wanted to swap e24 mirrors on the e28.

Maybe if the spacing for the screws is correct you could do something to fix the mismatch in the shapes of the mirror mount and the door pillar. Pull a mirror off the 5-series and one of the 6-series and give it a try. Worst case is you wasted an hour or so, but be very careful with the interior trim panel that hides the screws. They get very fragile with age, and replacements are scarce.

That chrome plating kit is pretty cool. Saw it done initially on Jay Leno's Garage maybe a year ago.
