So I just brought home my truck today. Its a black on black 2011 X5 Xdrive50i truck, bought it with 87k on it. I like it so far figured I would stop in and say hey. I was going to post up a picture, but I don't think I can drop them in directly from my computer yet in these forums. Could be wrong. Anyways, have a nice day people and great to be here and in my first BMW.
Congrats on the purchase and welcome to the sandbox!

Welcome! I'm right behind you in purchasing an X5 but still in the due diligence phase. I have an E39 540i that I love. I'm going back and forth between the 53 and the 70 because I've been told the 53 is much easier to DIY plus it's the same engine as my E39. With that said I liked the offerings of the 8 cylinder E70 engines.
Can you tell me what made you decide on the E70 please?
Thanks!

Before I saw the e70 that I purchased, I had no idea you could get the 4.4 Twin Turbo in those trucks. That is it, and it alone.
IMO they stack right up against a Trailblazer SS, SRT Jeep, and that kind of ride, but I know the TB SS' are not very good trucks, and SRT Jeeps have Chrysler issues (my wife drives an 05 with a hemi, it has had a lot of problems.)
You could split the difference and find an e53 with a 4.6 in it? Maybe? I don't know if I would recommend people to follow in my footsteps, I have a new BMW shop friend, and I am a professional mechanic for my career. These trucks may not be for everyone.

I need to find an owners manual for this truck badly.
no, its communicating with all the multiplexed systems that scare me. So its more like a BMW newer then 08ish scares me. Not really the engine. It has a v8 and turbo's its no different then a lot of other things really.
Gotcha. Yeah they definitely are more intricate than most of the product out there. With that said though, oddly enough, you really appreciate the thought they put into designing those systems.
BTW, any turbo lag when you stand on it?

it may have a little when its not in sport mode. Once its in sport it kind of just jumps to life. This is a motor making its rated torque at 1750rpms to. I will let you know when the initial awe of the power of this truck wears off if I think it has a bit of lag.
Full disclosure, this truck may scare me a bit less, because I do work as a mechanic. Granted I have been a ford guy, and currently am a heavy truck guy, but I do feel this gives me a little edge when it comes to the hard parts that may scare others. Turbos do not intimidate me, and I think this truck may end up being less complicated then some modern diesel motors, so I may have a little edge.
Congrats for your purchase
My e39 540i has 346k and climbing. I am just now dealing with my first electrical problem.
She's been A-MAZE-ING. Maintenance is obviously key and you know this as a mechanic, and these cars truly do need to be driven. With that said, and I've owned everything under the sun, is the best car all around in all categories have ever owned. I had an '06 X5 3.0 and I thought it was underpowered, but loved it otherwise. After experiencing the m62, I've got to have the n63 with turbos. Like you (plus I owned one before) so for me it's also the engine.
I don't know if it will help your search any, but I have a 2012 X5 XDrive35 with the N55 twin scroll turbo inline six and it is plenty powerful to me. And I always get the biggest engine in whatever series BMW application I drive. I have a '97 750iL, '03 540i, '06 550i, and '07 335i in addition to my E70. so I know BMW power. I used to have the XDrive50 and while there is certainly a difference between the two, my XDrive35 never leaves me wishing for more power. Plus, being turbocharged it's not terribly difficult to get a tune for it to significantly bolster the power if you're into tuning.
Just my .02. Good luck with your search. I'm actually in the market right now for an E53 3.0 to use as a beater.
It was amazing. Best car (truck) I ever had. When I ordered it I ticked every option they had. Was $80k out the door. Only reason I sold it was I needed money for a rental property I was buying. Part of the reason why I want to get an F10 550i so badly. That twin-turbo V8 in a lighter application, like a 5 series, must be an absolute rocket.
Welcome! I just picked up an E70 35d as well. Still have the E53 4.6iS, but it's currently listed for sale!

I always liked the 4.6is trucks. Like an e53 swan song. I drove one once it was kind of wicked, the stats on it just don't do it justice.
