I have been hunting around for a cheap 2005 x3 3.0 and found one on the local clist for $3,200. Lots of recent maintenance listed: Radiator, Radiator Fan, Coolant tank, Valve Cover gasket, Plugs, Complete CCV, Intake boot, Resealed oil filter housing, Belts & Pulleys, Transfer case gear repair, Brakes,
Battery. Downside is that it has 250,000 miles. Would I be crazy to buy it?
Did it have a new drive train? Jk, sounds like a good parts car.

Just took it for a long test drive. Everything seems to work ok. No CELs, no weird sounds, smells. One window regulator is broken. Has an aftermarket ipod connector that causes the battery to drain. Was really dark outside, so I will need to go back to see it in daylight before I decide whether or not to buy it.

Can't beat that price. I'd crawl under it and take a look just to be sure. Check the door jambs, trunk and engine bay for overspray that would indicate repairs.
Everything comes down to maintenance. My 05 is turning 206,000 and I wouldn't be afraid to take it across country. These engines are very solid and can go a long way.
Seems like some of the weak points have been addressed already.
Check for oil pan gasket leaks, that's a bitch to replace. Ask for more maintenance history and
Be prepared to replace everything that hasn't yet.

If it drives good and looks good, no. The price should reflect the mileage however.
Not sure how much help this will bring you at this point but my x3 after 130k miles needs a new drive train so I would imagine that one is due soon
I ended up picking up a 2006 X3 with 106,000 miles. Have done some basic maintenance and swapped out the oem headunit for a clarion with HD radio and bluetooth streaming capabilities. I really like the car but wish it had a bit more power. It feels slow compared to my old saab aero.
Man, that took a long time
