Thread: Alarm Install in BMW M Coupe

    Alarm Install in BMW M Coupe

    Hope this will help any others who are planning to do the install.

    When I came home this is what I found...


    Inside Box, BAV Auto was the only place that had this in stock as BMWNA is on backorder and NLA status. BAVAUTO had 5 in stock when I ordered mine.


    Subject for install


    Panels Removed


    Prewired connector for alarm


    Control Unit Installed. Velcro seems like a cheap way to install, wish it was bolted in.


    Plastic Rivet that needs to be removed for the siren mount


    Plastic Rivet Removed. Was tough to work out but finally was able to yank the pin out and then popped the rivet out.


    Siren installed. Was a tight fit to put in the nut and bolt since the area is very tight.


    Here is where I started routing the wire for the siren.


    Location of the prewired siren connector.

    Placement of connected wire.


    Here is where the pictures just stopped. The instructions tell you to remove the rear blank switch holder. That is easy enough but getting the thing back on is a nightmare. I had to loosen the whole console to get my hands underneath to squeeze the plastic and metal frame together... My suggestions would be, if possible, leave the piece in place and just pop out the blanks. Use a snake to get the wires in and you will save yourself the hassle on trying to get the piece back in. Here is the completed light and mic.


    Finally, make your final connections and you are done.

    Thanks for the write-up and pics. I was trying to find the wire for the siren wire and your pics helped. Mine was kinda underneath the fuse box and was zipped tied.

    I think all S54 M's are back there. It seems like a bad place as it is very hard to press as you need to reach back... I was thinking about relocating to the single open switch in the front but I am not sure if it will fit.

    I'm trying to figure out if I want to go with a Stellar unit or OEM. Does anyone know if it's possible to just use the OEM system without, say, installing some parts of the system such as the led/mic? Sounds like a pita to install. I would assume that it wouldn't function properly without all the inputs in place. I'm more interested in the keyless entry feature than I would be in the 90s-era theft protection technology..

    Has anyone here tried to train a Stellar unit to recognize an OEM remote? I'm almost positive they must use different FCC IDs, but thought I'd ask.

    Based on how basic the system is, I don't think you need to install the LED for the alarm to work as it seems to be an output device and does not send info back to the alarm. I rarely look at it either. Only items you need to worry about is the hood switch as it tends to malfunction. If it does it does not let you lock the car. All you need to do there is unplug and you are good to go for keyless entry.

    Just want to revive this thread as I am stuck on a similar install. I have the 82 11 1 469 445 alarm unit that I am installing to a 96 1.9 z3. All the plugs are there and I have the unit installed however there is one piece as shown in the picture that doesn't hook up to anything. The red alarm light for dash is already connected so that's not it... Any ideas where this goes? As it stands I have the unit connected and it isn't working so not sure if it is related to this one.

    the white plug is not used. From the looks of it, you're all installed. Search e36 alarm, there is a thread that has all the information you ever want to know about the alarm system.

    No clue what that plug is or does. I've never seen one and I have had my hands on countless E36 alarm systems & harnesses. It shouldn't be necessary for Z3 application. Your system not working is either the remotes are dead or not synced or the brain is fried.

    I'd start with trying to sync the remotes before saying the alarm is not working and go from there.

    Thanks. Should the red led turn on when the unit is first plugged? or does that start working after a remote is paired?

    I have always assumed, but cannot validate, that the extra connector is to attach the ultrasonic module listed under Z3/M coupes... 65758379940. I don't know if those were ever sold in the US. Here is an old, finished auction for one: http://www.ebay.de/itm/BMW-Z3-M-COUP...-/270992243019

    You should get a red light indication upon first connection. If you don't, one of the switches (hood, door, radio) is open/failed.

    Trying to make up for the inappropriate political joke above, here is a shot of my newly acquired 2000 M Roadster's alarm install... Just pulled the sagging glove box out (as I usually do on all my Z3s until I can get Euro boxes), and I found the same unused white connector as you mentioned above, but I also have an unused single lead connector too.

    I just got an OEM kit for my 2000 M Coupe and I'm looking forward to installing it soon. This DIY will be helpful!

    Well, finally got around to installing my OEM alarm in the M Coupe today...everything was going great except I couldn't get a light on the LED upon first connection. Checked all door switches, disconnected the hood switch too, still nothing. Knowing that the dealer I bought the car from f!@#$&ed up a whole host of things before I took delivery, I decided to check the radio theft switch. Sho'nuff, they had been in there as evidenced by the zip tie around the switch hole, and a bunch of different screws used throughout. My HVAC controls are all messed up too. I then disconnected the radio switch et. voila....red LED. Then it was just a matter of programming my two FOBs by doing the special dance... Great success!

    Did the kits come with a new hood switch? and if so, where does it mount? I am piecing mine together.

    Nope, I think the Z3's come with the plastic plunger style hood switch installed from the factory (front driver's side edge).

    I'm not positive, but I think E36 3 series cars (like my '99 M3) have just the wiring connector ready to go for the chrome arm style switch (passenger side fender edge).

    What car are you dealing with?

    My 98 Z3. I saw the plunger which I believed was the hood switch, but just wanted to confirm. My keyless setup came from a 318 so I had the switch.

    Ironically enough, I answered my question after I posted when I didn't shut the hood tightly and the lock wouldn't work. Closed the hood, and back to working.

    Can't find 12 pin harness

    Gents, I am struggling to find the 12 pin connector in my '01 Z3 Coupe (non-M). I clearly see it in the pic AW posted "Prewired connector for alarm". His is taped back and wrapped with velcro. I have no such harness. Its almost as as mine is not pre-wired yet so many on the ZSCCA FB group have said all Z's are wired. Curious, if you ran a VIN check on your Z is there an option for "Prewire for alarm"? HELP!
