    1978 633csi Getrag 225?

Hey everyone, I've had this Getrag 225 manual transmission for a while. I have no idea if its a 4 or 5 speed. I tried online but nothing was there about it. It's out of 1978 bmw 633csi. Any help? Thanks

I'd assume you have a Getrag 262 4-speed there, but I'm no expert. Should have a detachable bell housing, a single center case section and a tail case. Can you attach a pic of the tranny or the casting numbers? RealOEM says you have a 262.

I hadn't heard about a Getrag 225, so I Googled it. That transmission was never offered behind the M30. Getrag does occasionally have different internal designations for their gearboxes. If the casting numbers are something like 225 / 220.0.0.225.94, that's a Getrag 250 box - the 5 speed installed in most E36s with M42 or M50s. It had a reputation for wearing out the 1st gear selector sleeve, causing gear pop-outs. It was replaced with the ZF 310 and 330 if I have my facts straight.

Yep, that's a 262. Unbolt the slave cyl and take a peek, you'll see the part number. I can only see the first two digits '26' in your pic, but there's more there. Check these other sites out:

I think that 225 is some internal Getrag code, like casting batch number or date code. Those are great gearboxes...very tough, very small. They bolt up to Volvos too, I'd also suspect a few other cars have used them.

Can't tell from that photo if it's a 4 speed 262, or 5 speed 265 overdrive or close ratio. Zoom out a little. All 3 say '262' on them because the front of the case is the same. 1978 is almost certainly a 4 speed though. You might have some luck selling it to the E9 and E3 crowd. It's unlikely anyone with an E24 wants a 4 speed.
