    Problem with replacement E90 Cluster

    Hello,

I have a question regarding my 2007 BMW 328i's instrument cluster. I replaced it with a used one due to some malfunctions on the original one. Everything works fine on the replacement and the mileage reads correctly (with the exception of the dot), but the thing is that the Service Intervals do not seem to work, they are all displayed in an amber color as and there is no mileage or dates on them they just have "------" in their place and they display "km" beside it....which is weird because everything else is in miles. Is there something I need to "code" or "reset"? The red service warning always pops up when I start and turn off the car.....kind of annoying now

    Thanks a million!!

They'll sync up only if the cluster VIN matches the rest of the car.
There's a possibility to that when the VIN is changed in the cluster, the mileage might go up to the cluster mileage which could be higher than what you are seeing (from the CAS Milage)

Instrument cluster swaps require replacing or reprogramming the EEPROM chip with a hex editor. If the cluster had lower mileage than the car, you just need to erase the vin from the EEPROM, then use NCS Expert to code the cluster. Unfortunately getting at the EEPROM requires opening the cluster and removing the needles. At a minimum you will need a chip programmer ($40), and a K+DCAN cable ($20). The other option would be to desolder the EEPROM chip from the old cluster and solder it into the new one, or pay a local electronics shop to do it. You'll need software and the K+DCAN cable to get the needles back on right, and to do the coding. I'm happy to answer any question, or point you towards more detailed information.

    Thanks for the response!!

I think at this point I'd probably buy a chip and solder it on. I'm a bit curious to try the editing software but it might be quicker to use a new chip. How much do they cost? Whats it called and where can I get it? Thanks a lot!
