I have a quick question, I am looking to do a similar retrofit for my E39 and as far as I understand the process to do so is practically the same. My question is whether or not with the retrofit harness if I'll have to splice wires for the speakers.
If you buy the retrofit harness, there is no need to splice wires. It plugs in up front and in back. You just have to run the wire loom. I've done this to my E38 and E39. Retrofit harness is totally worth the money for the decreased work required.

I would need the navigation computer, 16:9 display, BM53 and all the associated mounting hardware, etc. But how do the speakers link up to the new system? I have seen harnesses where the speaker wires are integrated with the navigation harness and I assumed the retrofit harness was the same. Thanks again for the help!
The retrofit harness plugs into the radio plug up front and relocates that plug to the rear, so essentially, it's plugging the radio from the rear into the front. So everything is hooked up and no wires need to be cut. It just uses the current wiring and relocates the radio plug to the rear among other things like running the video wires up to the monitor up front.
