New Owner - Parked Since '98

    Hey guys,

Just picked up an E23 over the weekend as a new project. It's a 1984 733 manual. 1-owner, flawless interior, has been in storage since 1998. Based on the gas that I drained from the tank, I'd say it hasn't run since then either. Right now I'm just going through everything and replacing all the fluids, spark plugs, etc.

The biggest issue I've run into (aside from it not starting) is that the ignition switch won't engage the starter. I'm using the diagnostic port to crank it right now, but I'd like to get the switch fixed at some point. Question is: is it the switch itself or the tumbler? It's really hard to get the key in a position that will allow the assembly to turn, and when it does, it has a lot of slop in it with no distinct I, II or III positions.

Some terrible pictures from before I got it home:

    Thumbs up

Fog the cylinders with a good creeping penetrant like Kroil before trying to start it and spin it over by hand for a while. Sitting that long, you may want to use a pressurized oil priming system to put fresh oil on all bearing surfaces. Cannot be too careful. Just replace the ignition switch, they are a crappy design. US cars are around $220 last I checked.

Injectors will be stuck or varnished up too, BTDT.

Welcome, car looks nice. Where are the floor mats?

No floor mats with it. Haha

I let the cylinders soak for a while. Spun over by hand smoothly with no issues. Injectors are definitely gummed up. It'll try to start but really only sputters once it burns off the fuel from the cold start injector. What's the best way to clean out the injectors?

I am always curious how floor mats vanish with time.

We like http://cruzinperformance.com/ for injector service or Al here in Dallas.
