I have been t/s my E60 now for weeks. Issue:
Starter cranks strongly, but there is absolutely no attempt at firing.
The first thing I did was get the battery checked. I took it to autozone, and they give it a charge (yes, they knew it was an AGM battery) and I was expecting it to be bad, but they said it was just fine!
Well, after blowing more money on this Carly adapter and app for my phone, I setup a parameter to monitor the battery voltage during cranking. I even put my battery charger on the thing to give it a boost... With battery fully charged, I get something around 12.4V? During cranking, it drops to 10.6-11.3 depending. Is there a threshold to which the computers need during crank? Did Autozone prove their unworthiness and tell my I had a good battery, when it is in fact bad? BTW, the starter is just cranking like crazy. It doesnt appear to be tired or poorly powered at all.
Please advise...
Rod
Those numbers are normal during cranking same as mine anyway and never caused me any problem. Mine has even been lower than your 10.6.

What does Carly say about error codes?
EWS-CAS sync. You need INPA or Rheingold to do it.
Without knowing your detail on history on how/what happened I'd suggest check/replace your IVM assuming w're talking about a 545i.

Good point cmyachtie! If it is a n62, look at the IVM. No other engines in the e60 line use IV's. The e60 came fitted with m54, n52, n53, n54, n57, n62 engines as 525i, 528i, 530i, 535d, 535i, 545i and 550i in North America an many other engine options through the world.

I did that. If that is the small square module under the right (passenger side) air filter... Yep... done it... no change.

You've got all the tools but you can't tell us the codes. If EWS-CAS sync is an issue there will be a code for it. You can google the Rheingold procedure as well as I can. Read the codes with Rheingold. With most codes it will then give you an option to run a test plan which I suspect will lead you the alignment procedure.
I wasnt holding the codes hostage.
With regards to ISTA, there are so many versions, so many install procedures, everything looks different, no single source of info. I keep downloading and buying tools just to find another wall that cannot be overcome. No clear path from A to B. Now, i'm on the path of Rheingold, and awaiting the blessed K+DCAN adapter. Who knows what wall I will hit next to interrupt that road to resolution. Even in the Rheingold download... Its all manual extraction, and moving files and folders to the right location... Plus there is an ISTA-D, and an ISTA-P? I have no idea the difference.. nothing is mentioned about it, etc etc etc. I'm not asking all of those questions, but it just fuels the frustration to all of these tools and short sentences like "you have to use ISTA". I'm not flaming you here, please dont misunderstand. Its a huge learning curve with any one of these tools, and I'm even a computer tech, and its a huge ordeal to get this stuff running with very little specifics for help.
The codes. See attached .txt for even more.

You want ISTA/D....D for diagnostics. Ask for the link at http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...27223&page=162.
Here's the manual

What year is your 545?
Put a charger on the battery.
What did you read the EWS3.3 interface DME-EWS codes with? They seem to conflict with the carly codes
Carly says it can't read the DME and there are no problems with the Immobilizer.
From .txt file......

Get Rheingold up and running.
pshovest,
Thanks for the reply. Everything you see here came from carly reports. The EWS3.3 interface DME-EWS came up separately, but still in the carly app.
I have never seen anything so cryptic and unintelligible... I've been a PC/SW tech for nearly 3 decades. I will check the links. It will be the 4th attempt to go down a road to find proper software and interface to do this. Just so you understand my frustration with this. Up until this point, there has been no avenue without an insurmountable block that no one can help me overcome.
What year is your 545? = 2004
Put a charger on the battery. = Sure thing... will be the 3rd time.

Ok, then... after much struggle and investigation, I have this ISTA running. I believe it is ISTA-D. I believe the EWS is completely missing. It does not show up in the control unit tree. I suppose I need to check for fuses/relays again... Any guesses? Attached is the tree. Let me know what you think.
I see a big red box in the second column with nothing in it. I suspect there is supposed to be something there. I also see this lone box labeled -0xF1. I wonder if that is it... But, its lost.

Ok.... Thanks to the Jamaicans, and their youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nT55KcW6Os I FINALLY got the thing to start! Now, lots of codes to deal with... Need to see how to get those cleared. Thanks, especially to pshovest, who finally got this off center.
