As a first time BMW owner, would a 1987 BMW 5283 be a good starter? I don't have one yet, but might be considering one. The car has a lot of cosmetic issues, but mechanically its sound. How much of a learning curve is there to fixing up these cars?
Ben
I haven't picked it up yet, but I just bought a 528e. I chose the model in order to get the eta engine which gets the best gas mileage of all e28's and has a reputation for longivity. E-21's and E-28's both have short learning curves. Good luck! John

They know those cars well, ask anything there.

I HAVE 2 E28'S ETA & SETA - 5 SP FAST - AUTO SLOW - but great hwy car - spend $2500 inparts - re new everything rubber - change fuel pump & filter - tune it - (change timing belt) - brakes tires & drive it till hell freezes over.
it soon should w/ trump in office. great cars - oh & paint it I'm sure it needs it
Thanks guys, I actually just bought a 1987 e28 528e 5 speed. Love it, needs a lot of work. I will post pictures, paint is rough. I am building up a list of repairs that need to be done. First is the Center Support Bearing, which is shot. I will definitely be seeking advice from both Bimmer Forums and MyE28.
Ben
change the timing belt & tenioner - now - if it breaks - ur screwed- not a joke - dont hi rev till u do or - snap & bent valves & ouch
Yeah, definitely need to do that. Also the rev limiter is off on this e28 so I thinking there is a chip in there.
Ben
No rev limiter; timing belt of unknown age...what could go wrong! Just kidding. John
snap crackle & pop= then cry
Good for you op. Looking at a e28 myself as well. Does your odometer still work?
Lot of cars don't have the odometer working.
