Hi all,
This clunk is driving me nuts. It happens only when turning near full lock at low speeds - in either direction. Cannot recreate when stopped. Initially it was a softer clunk and I believe it only happened turning right; now it's a notable clunk (you can feel and hear it) in both directions.
Car: 1999 M Roadster
Springs/Struts: GC full coilover kit (2 years / 9k mi old)
Camber plates: GC street plates (2 years / 9k mi old)
Endlinks: Meyle HD (also 2 years / 9k mi old)
Swaybar bushings: Lemforder (3 mos / 2kmi old)
I lifted both front tires and tried to shake them - maybe a little play in the 3-9 o'clock position (really not much), none in the 12-6 o'clock position. Makes me thinks MAYBE the tie rods and not the ball joints? Car only has 60k miles so it does seem a little premature, even given the age. Anyone had this same clunk? Any ideas? I don't want to just throw money at a problem but it seems like that's what I'm going to have to do.
Thanks,
Cyrus
An 18yo BMW with 60,000mi., and you feel it's premature for suspension component failure?
Maybe it's time for control arms with FCAB's? Really, I think it's time for a suspension refresh.
Not counting what you've already replaced-tie rods,balljoints,control arms(if any damage),FCAB bushings.

Should also mention I did replaced the FCABs around 2 years ago with Lemforder ones. Only reason I am doubting the tierods are bad is because I've been reading on this forum and there are many, many people with double the mileage on the same age parts that are still going strong. Obviously that doesn't eliminate them, but it does make them less likely?
