Didn't drive much. If I get time I will change the oil tomorrow. you do 10w40? I usually use Mobile1 0w40. Is it worth it getting filter from BMW? its 20 bucks

Hengst or Mann HU938, same filter as the 740. Mahle filters have o-ring issues, so avoid them for now.

    M1 0W40 is perfect.

Checked coolant today, was at correct level but still reading low..still added lil coolant. maybe a bad sensor. What a bitch.
Took the car on a 25 miles trip, not overheating but coolant temp varies between 108 and 113..at one point it got to 116 under heavy acceleration. But temp gauge stays at 12 oclock.
When crossing it set between 108 and 111.

Are these temperatures too high for this engine?

Shouldn't pass 110, are you reading it from the LCD cluster? Gauge is a mechanical idiot light more or less, once it passes 120C it'll go straight into the red. Please drain the oil before doing anything else and going on long trips, and it also obviously helps cool the engine.

You can use Wix\Napa Gold filters if you need it for tomorrow. Just get it drained ASAP, no reason to chase your tail when the car is running on milkshake.

Replacee old today..coolant temp goes to around 110. And i some point it went down to 89 once cruising at higher speed then back up..but that one time it went that low.
It seem to get stay at 108-110 when cruising around 40 miles per hour.. but if going really slow or getting to a stop it get to 111 and few times to 113.

110c is the highest temp you should ever see unless air in the system or maybe fan clutch is bad...

Yes it definitely runs a lot cooler.

I drained about 10 quarts oil of oil. Isn't that too much?
Added 8.5 quarts of new oil mobile1 0w40 and the dip stick still read low. I get the right reading at about lil over 9 quarts.

Is the 10 quarts of oil way too much for this engine?

8.5 is intended fill. Check when warm, but 9 quarts is fine.

    10 quarts is too much.

Yep, common mistake. 10 quarts isn't enough to cause it to whip up in the crankcase, but it's good practice to get it out.

That car might be Canada spec judging by the CEL.

    Hows the canada version different?
Also when I sucked out the old oil, 10 quarts came out. And when adding 8.5 wasnt enough, thats why I figure i should just dump all in here. and level was good with at 10 quarts

Nevermind, it should normally should display in km. The SES is lit up like a 1995-1998 car with an engine icon, so the cluster has been replaced at some point or it was there out of luck. Kind of rare to see that style.

So i sucked out 1 quart of oil..went on another 25 miles ride.. coolant temp varies between 108 and 110..most of the time its at 110. Few times it got to 111 for few seconds then back to 110.

Hope i got it right this time.

How to check if thermostat is opening? If I put the ignition to open position, heat on high and fan on low, and open the extension tank and bleeder screw, Shouldn't I see coolant circulating and going back into the tank from the lil hole ?
On this car nothing is happening when I have both the cap off and bleeder screw off while the heat is on high and fan on low.

Thermostat is electronically controlled. As long as it gets up to temp fairly fast, it's doing its job.
