    2013 650i Gran Coupe Blown Engine

    After 9 service visits to my local BMW dealer in the last 2 years mostly for the dreaded Drive Train Malfunction, my engine seized last Saturday. 3 years ago I was using 2 quarts of oil every 1,200 miles as indicted by the Low Oil warning light. I was told by my BMW Service Technician that was normal for a twin turbo V8. A year ago after a fuel injector fix for a Drive Train Malfunction, the Low Oil Level warning light stopped going on. My Tech told me they had fixed the oil consumption problem. The BMW Service Center analysis of the blown engine showed only 3 quarts of oil (9 quart capacity) and recently 20 Low Oil Level warnings that I never saw. The car is out of warranty as of August 2016 and my tech told me a new engine would be $39,000 and a used for about $20,000. The fact that the Low Oil warning light did not illuminate when the oil level was dangerously low leading to catastrophic engine malfunction is driving me crazy. I'm wondering if the Service Center did something when replacing the fuel injector that prevented the oil warning light from going on.

    Any advice would be helpful.

    Wow WHAT A NIGHTMARE!!! Mine, also a 2013 650i was losing oil a few months ago and I took it in and they said they fixed the issue and the next day, low oil light came on again and took it back in and 5 days later they fixed it. I can't remember what they said it was but I was good. Then about a month ago, I got "Drive Train Malfunction" on my iDrive. Scared the #$&( out of me. however, when I got back in my car after going in somewhere for a few hours, it went off. It hasn't come back on since. I've read that some people have this issue and then others never have it again.

    $39,000??? WOW. I am sorry this happened to you. This really scares me that mine will eventually do the same thing. Apparently it's an issue with this engine on some 650is but others never have the issue.

    Mine is under warranty still until July and I also have a 4 year extended warranty which, I think covers the engine. Let us know what you do. Soooo sorry.

    You guys are scaring me. I just picked up a 2013 650i X-drive with 23k miles on it - still under warranty til October. I'll keep a close eye on the oil level. But I paid less for the whole car (it's like new, Bang & Olufsen, loaded up) than the $39k you were quoted for the engine. I had a similar oil consumption problem (1 quart every 900 miles or so) with my wife's 2010 Audi 2.0T a few years back. After taking it in for the problem twice, on the third time they finally agreed to change out the pistons - huge job, pulled the engine, took the whole top off of it, put in new pistons sealed it back up all together and that car has been perfect ever since. I think some of these big turbo cars just don't get broken in as they should and the rings never get seated properly, and oil is lost into combustion - which is NOT NOT NOT normal for ANY car to lose that much oil without a drop of it outside the car.20170220_212640340_iOS.jpg
