Clearing calipers

Is there a way to calculate if the wheel will clear brake calipers for sure without any spacers? This is on nonM3 e36 for 17" wheel ET 25 or ET 30? Is there a way to approximate that? At which offsets that this become a problem?

At lower than stock 41mm if risk a chance of running into issues. Anything higher (lower the number) than 41 starts to push the wheel outwards of the hub.

I thought it was the other way around. ET40 is towards the center of the car and ET20 is towards the outside, for example. Plenty have run E39 17 inch ET20 wheels on M3 with calipers bigger than non M and no issues with calipers. The issue is with rubbing the rear outer fender with anything bigger than 225/45 tires. You can't run 245/40 with 17 inch ET20 rear wheels.
