Thanks, The wagon has been sitting quietly under a cover since November waiting for the Module to be installed. Clean as ever. Business and the constant leaf blowing and carting to the street gets in the way. Have to chain saw all these oak trees, or build that stand alone 3 car garage the architect drew up when we were doing the complete re-do on our house a few years ago.

Off to repair the X5 as it decided to puke a hard brake line under the long shielding running to the rear brakes. Always a nice winter project.

    Wagon Projects
Brakes: Front Brake upgrade to 540/530 calipers and Rotors, replace rear rotors and pads, (need to have the same brand pads front and rear so...) flush system.
Pull front cross member and replace oil pan gasket
Install new tires and make decision on wheels (refinish or leave alone) I am the only one who would notice or care...
Weekly Wash & Clean and then clean some more as winter is here and they salt everything when it looks like snow or ice. Last year there was 1" of salt in the street, so only the Minvan was driven for 30 days!

awww man....no way !!??!! you caught that I just had mine suffer the same fate right !!?? I was laying in the driveway under that car till god knows what hour in 20 deg weather splicing in a section. They all rot there...the X5's and the e39's were notorious for it. I got a couple lengths of steel brake lines w/fittings (which I just cut off...) from NAPA and a few compression fittings and spliced in a section. Gotta do the other circuit soon...like this weekend.... That will tide me over till spring I hope, I'll get it up on four stands and replace it all (front to rear) with legit fittings and lines.
Good luck with that...and sorry you have to deal with that now. I feel for ya totally

Nice projects on the horizon...have fun with that oil pan...lol... That would be on my "to don't" list in winter....!! haha...

That maybe a garage project. Need a little more length than the 1960 designed garage under the house allows. I guess they made cars shorter in those days (ha ha). A few houses in this small custom home area have 3 car garages and extra wide spaces for a shop. One even has a repair pit! Not mine..... I got the extra large bedroom (my home office) and a large family room (!..??) on the lowest level. Total waste of garage space. Welcome to high end homes in 1959-1962. No car guys in the Gov at that time.

    Week two.
After repair, All abs issues resolved. Feels great to have that one completed. When I was having the module failure, I could sit at a light with my foot on the brake and have the fault light turn on and off without moving either the car or my foot from the brake pedal. Unnerving to say the least as one thing that should always be Functional are brakes, as sooner or later you will need them in a hurry....
Thanks again Danny for the tip on the rebuilder.

Feels good to have properly working ABS/traction, doesn't it? I always act like I don't need it, but it's saved my bacon on more than one occasion‚ most notably when I had a tire blow on the way to San Francisco. I initially noticed a bunch of shaking from the rear, and then the traction control light started blinking constantly. I was able to keep the car under control enough to change lanes, slow down from 80mph, and safely pull over into the shoulder. I can't imagine what would have happened if I didn't have that working correctly...

Thumbs up New shoes for Valentine's Day

    New update!

This wagon was part of the GIANT air bag recall which I have been putting off until BMW started calling and emailing me weekly. Waited until the roads were unsalted and dry to take in a perfectly clean E39, something I am sure they never see. It was interesting to see their reactions especially as I am there frequently as a parts customer. After 1 hr it was done. Bag is not as nice as the OE one as far as fit and finish, but it was free. The "40 point inspection" came back blank, which tells me no one bothered to look under the car as the oil pan is still weeping. I guess a totally clean and detailed car means it needs nothing....

Finally made the decision on what to do about the "Wagon Wheels". The decision was a coin flip as the intention for the wagon is to be a Daily Driver not a show piece that never gets it's toes dirty as I already have one of those. The wheels that came from the factory are nice but they have 15 years of road trash hits, a few curb hits, and a few deep scratches that repeated attempts at polishing buffing, waxing, IRON removal, etc, etc do not remove, hide or get better. At 10 feet they look perfect to the casual observer. Being ACD by nature ...oh well.

Tires Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ 235/45/17 have been sitting and waiting since December for something to mount on, so I pulled the trigger and she will have new shoes as a St Valentine's Day gift....

Update: They are now mounted and balanced, hand polished, and waxed quietly waiting for a dry spell to be mounted and road tested.

They are still sitting quietly waiting for all salt to get washed away...... Around here they salt the roads if it is going to rain and the temps are below 40. The roads are white with speed bumps of salt piles.

I'm gonna go through some real hoops to get an airbag replacement, lol. I have a 2000 540it which technically isn't in the recall, but I installed a steering wheel from a 2001+ M5 as soon as I bought the car. No idea what year the M5 steering wheel is from, I just bought it from Clemster on M5Board. Pretty sure it's a bad Takata wheel since it's a facelift sport wheel.

Here is the little secret on getting re-con wheels with NO core charges at the recon price of the local shops.

www.rockauto.com enter in any application and then click "Wheels" They are using Keystone Parts Warehouse's supplier who does it at a massive scale for the wholesale parts supplier market. This is the 2nd set I have seen and I am impressed. No it is not like having Prince Wheel in NC do them, but for the price.....

Pull off the vapor barrier on the RR door as three attempts to get the sealant to stick to the barrier failed. Tried all the normal tricks but failed. Cleaned all the door contact area, now waiting on the replacement parts from the local dealer as I will do both rear doors then replace the step/scruff plates. They look tired too.

    Question:
Getting water in on the rear floors? When opening the rear doors after rain or a car wash, do you get a splash of water falling on the ground? WAY TOO Common vapor barrier seal failure. Quick trick is to take a heat gun and see if the body sealer will restick to the foam material called a vapor barrier (The parts books call it a sound insulator). If you can not, order in the 3M sealer and a vapor barrier. DO NOT use RTV, as when your window regulator fails (this part failure is a when not if) you will have to get order a new one as it will tear.

I had been checking Rockauto for the wheels from Keystone, they had a rear 9” Style 66, $158!!! I get paid every Friday, went to go order it, it was gone....
They still don’t have one, been two weeks now. I checked Keystone directly since the shop I work at deals with them, they are out of stock. They do not stock Style 65’s. Under M5, they have 66’s

I mark down Style 65's as hen's teeth, as the chances of Keystone getting in enough to warrant a batch run would be approx ZERO. The only solution is used followed by a road trip to Prince's Wheel shop south of Charlotte for run out truing and the right finish that you could be proud of....or new at $500 each min. Most of the used ones make me run not walk away as they are crubbed, bent and the finish is crazed and peeling.

I actually have 2 sets of 65's. One set is on my 540, the second set is being prepped for powdercoat, and will be on my wagon after I order a set of DWS Continentals. Currently, I have a square set of 8" wide style 66's on the wagon, I still have one of the 9" style 66's, the other one got a big dent in the inner lip after I hit a big gaping pothole doing about 85mph in NJ a few months ago. That crummy state just never fails to provide more reasons why it should be listed as a Federal Disaster Zone.... So, I was gonna pick up the one 9" style 66 that Rockauto had a few weeks ago, but missed it by a day, and they still have not restocked.
Am I looking for more 65's? Always, but I will not pay the premium price that many ask for, If I did, I'd rather pay a little more for brand new ones from the dealership instead.

    Door Panel cleaning

Since I am resealing the door panels, I thought I would take more than a few passes on cleaning these down to the granular level. Five coats of Griot's leather protectant and 4 coatings of Griot's Vinyl Protect on the plastics, (Let everything soak in for 2-3 days while reapplying product a few times). Pulled the trim and waxed with Best in Show, even tooth brushed the door pocket felt too! This is the second time I have cleaned these guys but not at this level. I even mixed up a little Clorox water and tooth brushed all the mold spots on the back side and then clean again.
Show time madness kicking in. Now off to get the M5 ready for the Concours De Excellence (BMW, Porsche, Mercedes Benz) in May. It will be fun once again as Spring is finally here. (Snow possible this weekend)

    Stephen,

This thread is an amazing read! Thank you for posting all of this up since it is very informative and fun to follow.

To answer your question, even with the vapor barriers not leaking, I have always gotten a splash of water when I open an E39's rear door after a car wash or a heavy rain.

Check your little drain holes under the door rubber seals at the bottom to make sure they are clear and flowing. There is a post where a few people notch them to allow flow. That should not be necessary on properly sealed doors.

Finally the weather broke for the drier and I installed the new wheels and tires. First drive report: Vibration from the old tires and wheels is completely gone. Road noise is 50% reduced and handles wonderful due to new tires. Runs up to 85 mph all is good to go!

Sad part is that no one notices the new wheels as the old ones looked nice from 10 feet.

Image below is from the local cars and coffee meet up at 6 AM hence no cars but me in the back sections.

Any body need some wagon wheels? Tires, wheel, center caps, and lug nuts included. $150 OBO Local pick up only.

The OE wheel and tires that were on my wagon when purchased. Star Spoke 81, 17" Wheels look great at 10 ft a few curb rashes. Tires are Michelin A/S 4-5/32" tread left, no cuts, or bead damage. Balance and mounted ready to go to a new home.DSC_0712.jpg
