Nothing exciting to report other than an annual oil change w/ filter and replaced the cabin filters. Detailed the under hood while waiting for the oil drippings to stop. Found my source of the missing anti-freeze leak, Lower hose O Ring to rad. The PO had a shop replaced the Rad and WP just before purchase. So that means a twister or split O ring. Off the find the posting on the O ring part number. Puts out one drop per 5 min under pressure. Almost the same rate of loss as one of those cheap porous aluminum Thermostat housings.
Mileage on oil 5K mostly short drives followed by a few Highway buzzes. Slight Mayo tint on the oil filler cap as she has been sitting under a cover for the last few weeks nicely detailed.

Update: Still sitting under it cover waiting out a heavy rain to wash off all the salt brine on the streets around here. They put so much down that every spring, creek, and puddle will be a death trap for any living thing or potential rusting metal part. Forget about salamanders and little peeping toads this spring. No need to "kill, bury, and shut up" around here there will be no survivors!

Racked up another 2K in miles without any issues. Been running up and down the interstates with a heavy foot. at 75-80 MPH she returns 26.5-27.3 MPG. Highway mile muncher for sure.

always look forward to a StephenVA post !!

When we traveled the fam in Frau Christine, I'd be slightly disappointed getting 26/27...which you would get at those speeds. Push it faster and the mileage will get better....(90+ = 30++)

    More Mileage today:
Ran down to the NC/VA border this am and back. 193 miles one way 2.5 hrs travel time, average speed 77.2 MPH, 28.7MPG weather cool (39-45 degrees). New speed record! Only hit 105 once, promise officer.
Interesting note: Speedo shows 85, computer shows 79, GPS matches computer. I know there is a setting somewhere to make the speedo show real speed but where?
Round trip with no traffic 392 miles 27.4 MPG. (yes, I did not take the by-pass around Richmond, VA on the way back so it was shorter home.)

Off to wash the wagon again this week...Damn pollen.

Six months later, Fresh oil and a filter. Need to post that I did 6,000 this period (no hick ups, quirks, etc). Still pulling 27-28 Highway. The wagon has been doing lots of volunteer runs picking up and delivering doggies who need a second chance a great new life. Been washing her weekly and after each run to get the bugs off. Need to order headlamp adjusters as I am now only seeing 12 ft in front of the car illuminated with the low beams. Kind of like driving with 5 fire flies in a jar candle power. Going to do the "ship in a bottle" approach as these assemblies are from my 40K M5.

The O ring replacement on the temp sensor in the lower hose solved the antifreeze leaking one cup a month. Best $.59 ever spent. Has to be the cheapest BMW repair I have ever seen. Being totally anal I order one from each vendor and received the same part under different numbers.
O Ring Aux Fan Switch Aftermarket part - CSS091159010 $.59 to $.79 depending on vendor. Rockauto.com ÜRO PARTS13621433077S.

Nothing exciting except another oil change, wash wax and interior detail. So easy to clean as I have color matching cloth bath mats over the new floor mats. Just roll them up, shake them and re-install. No dirt, no wear, no mess. Yes, very anal. Still pulls anywhere from 23 combined MPG to 30 MPG if I granny foot it. Upgrade: Add a "Stress Bar" for grins. This step will make Snotty's head explode. Pics coming as I aluminum polished it before install. Shiny!

Have all the parts for the oil pan gasket and brake swap projects. Been too busy with other things.

That should have read STRUT BRACE OR STRUT BAR!
Better known as under-hood candy or $$ waster. Butt dyno shows (feels?) a little tighter feeling under turns but nothing overwhelming.

Why would I rain on your strutbar parade? I have a goofy one that works quite well on my silver wagon, and I scored a brand new old stock Racing Dynamics strut bar and put it on the green wagon. Did it help handling, they sure do, there’s an exit off of 395 onto Duke St here in Alexandria, before the strut bar, I was nailing that 25mph exit at 70 just fine, now with the strut bar, I’m hitting it at 72, butt dyno says it’s woikin.....

    +++ to everything

I hate not having the wagon anymore. It was a love/hate...but more love than hate. And I enjoyed going back and forth with you guys...which is why I lurk here at times.

S-to-tha-Viz-ay.... pop up a quick shot of your ride again...! just entertain me man...c'mon...the weather has been dreary...and I need a quick fix.

We have an e70 for my wife now. She loves that thing. but I have to say, the e70 side of the forum seems like a snooze fest.

This is the 2nd set I have seen and I am impressed. No it is not like having Prince Wheel in NC do them, but for the price.....
Update: Rockauto.com no longer list wheels for BMWs. Guess that cheap price with no core killed that profit item. Have been thinking I need style 37 or the 17" look a like Style 66 but the way the spokes hit the outer barrels on the Style 66 makes them look "clunky". You loose the clean lips. Don't want to move up to 18" tires as this one is a run around town car.

Wagon update: Oil Change and filter, interior detail and a clay and wax job another 6 months and all is well. The front strut bar works! I install this inexpensive one. https://www.ecstuning.com/b-wiechers...v8/067018~wie/

Front Wheel bearings are talking so they will go on when I install the brake upgrade to the 540/530 calipers, brackets, and rotors. All of which are sitting quietly in a box waiting for action.

Starting on the complete brakes overhaul this weekend to clear out my growing pile of parts and car projects. Unlike some of you I am still working my real job some 10-12 hrs daily so this project has been on the back burner for a while.
Dragged out the new hydraulic potable lift and popped up the wagon while the winds hit 35 mph.

Up first: Rear brakes, new rotors Centric high carbon content cyo frozen, caliper rebuild with an everything gets replaced approach, brake hoses. Cleaned and armor All the wheel wells. Pads are the Power Stop Z17 Evolution Ceramics models that I installed on the X5.

Nice and quiet w/no dust! Bite is 85% of OE stone cold, great bite and even consistent pedal pressure response on stops while providing higher resistance to heat.
Parking brake looks like new so cleaned and closed it up.
Wheels - washed, polished, and waxed.

    Front:

Wheel bearings installed w/ the larger 540/530 calipers and mounting brackets, with brake rotors to match, braided steel hose lines, pads, the 540 splash shields do not fit the the hub/uprights so they are unused , plus all new parts pins, bolts etc. the goal is to gain a little better brake force, less fade when pushed hard on mtn roads, and add some bling by filling in the wheels, and show off these nicely painted calipers and blacked out rotors. As if anyone even notices a family wagon in silver.... way too anal as always.

Images below from the front work.

Up next: Clean the wheel wells!

Completed the Brake "upgrade" from the little 528/525 brakes to the BIG and HEAVY 540/530 brakes. Also replaced the front wheel bearings as I was getting a over 15 MPH+ rumble out of the front end. There is a DIY on the forum on how to replace the front Brgs that make this job easy. Four bolts and a hammer hit and your done. I pulled the pinch bolt as I needed to use an impact on one side.

Now waiting for the continuous rain to stop so I can road test and bed in the brakes. I do not want my freshly polished and wax wheels and nice and the clean wheel wells to get oak pollen all over them! Come on dry weather. Again way too anal.....

Would be lovely for a lighter and higher performance caliper option that isn’t a gigantic BBK requiring 17”+ wheels.

Nice work, those calipers look new!

This little "upgrade" with good pads should be enough for me as I am easy on brakes as I don't feel the need to out-brake the next guy for the exit ramp....

Hey Stevie, was surfing the innerwebs and found this, didn't know POR15 also makes High Temp paint good up to 1200 degrees. Should be great for those new raw iron calipers you put on the wagon. Comes in cans or spray form, they have three colors, Aluminum, Metallic Grey, and Flat Black.
My powder coated calipers that I did a few years ago actually held up well, until I pulled them off the old wagon to give Robert my struts and spindles, and tire rod ends. Had them in a box, forgot to drain the brake fluid out and they oozed out some fluid and ate some of the paint. I can re powdercoat them, but heck, they're just regular calipers anyway, maybe I'll just try the High Temp POR15.

POR15 also makes actual caliper paint, but the stupid part is, it's only good up to 500 degrees, which would be fine for normal street driving, but what if you get into a long drawn high speed police chase, I know I wouldn't want my calipers paint flaking off while I make the cops look stupid.....
But the caliper paint line does give you more of the boy racer colors, like red, blue, yellow, and black, not my style, but for the black. I think I'll stick with the high temp paint line and go for the gunmetal finish.

Loved this line in the product description: "POR-15® High Temp is capable of withstanding extreme temperatures up to 1200°F and will resist cracking, chipping, and peeling. Applications:• High heat stacks• Boiler jackets or breechings• Heat exchangers• Drying kilns• Incinerators• Ovens"

Since the rubber boots melt at something likely below 500 degrees, do you really need this level of protection during a chase? This "Hoodie" might be more appropriate..see below

Under race conditions, or high speed car chases, they can hit 1001 degrees, according to inner web sources, I’m gonna go for broke, same price, and not shinny. The rubber seals, Viton, I know, 440 degrees, but! They can take much higher temps for a short while. That might just let me get away, and run another day! F’n A!

Final round of re torque all the bolts, wheels installed and road tested the brakes and pad bed-in process completed as the roads were finally dry for 24 hrs. Nice smooth ride, no noises, clanks or wheel shuttering. Slight noticeable added weight or maybe it was my passenger...
Stops are even, great pedal pressure modulation without the least hint of inconsistency. Great upgrade and good selection on pads and rotors once again. Wiped down and back under the covers as it is going to flood here today and the trees are dumping oak pollen bags. Nasty crap that looks like pile of dead worms all over your car and into every notch of the cowl area.

Snotty rotors for your 540 wagon are sitting here all boxed up and bagged waiting for a pick up.... Donations to the under employed.

With how much my car sits outside... been thinking of a cover. Never been a huge fan of covers but my paint kinda sucks anyway.
