    Newbie has DCT Question

I just bought a 2013 M5 with 28k miles on it. I've been a Ford guy all my life and switched to BMW a year ago so this is new to me. The tranny does something and I need to know if this is normal or not. When I put it in gear the car doesn't move until I give it gas, like the clutch is not engaged. Is this normal or do I have a problem? TIA

I'm a bit confused - you mean the car will not move unless you give throttle when you put it in gear and have your foot off the brake?

Yes that is correct. If I just take my foot off the brake it won't move until I give it gas. I expected it to roll forward but it doesn't.

Spoke with a colleague of mine and he brought up a great point - it's likely the hill assist feature; meaning that the car auto stabilizes itself until throttle is given; no matter if there is a slight hill or not. He also mentioned that if you leave your foot off the brake for like 10 seconds, the car may disengage the assist and start to very slowly creep forward. Bottom line, not an issue you should be worried about. Hope this helps.

My 2015 M6 with DCT does the same thing. If I recall correctly, my Ferrari with a DCT did the same thing. Might be something common to all DCTs. It is a bit annoying when trying to inch up in a parking space, but not something to worry about.

It's just like having a manual transmission without having a clutch pedal. It's not like a normal automatic. Touching the gas is like releasing the clutch and engaging the throttle in a manual car.
