    Valve Stem Seals

Hi all, I bought my 2005 645 pretty recently and am now experiencing what I had known was coming all along. I have the blue/white smoke issue as well as a coolant and oil leaks from many different locations. I figured I would tackle the head gaskets, valve cover gaskets, timing cover gaskets and while i'm in there the valve stem seals. Are there any good diy's that outline how to do the Valve stem seals?

    Thanks!

You are going to need to rent or buy the specialty tools. Renting is about $400, purchasing is way more

Is there a way the heads can be removed with the engine in the car?

How big of a job is this? Approx. number of man-hours?

    Thx

Hello, I'm located in New Jersey and perform valve stem seals replacement on the N62 engines. I'm a 25yr BMW Master Tech and use the specially designed AGA tool kit. $2500.00 is the cost, ....new valve stem seals, valve cover gaskets, front cover gaskets. Usually takes 3-4 days. You can contact me here: roadracer490@comcast.net

Go on facebook type in bmw aga tool. Hes a great guy and charges about 275 for a week. Dont quote me on the price. But hes very reliable and can give a few pointers. And now he sells a lot of the parts youll need for the job. Very good price

Why is it that there are no aftermarket VSS that will hold up better than OEM? As long as you are going to replace them, it would be nice to use a better quality product. Kind of like putting a faulty heart valve into a patient when you know it's going to fail.

Well, I have now heard that newer seals from BMW do not fail, and the original OEM versions were a 'bad batch'.

You'd think BMW would cover this under Customer Goodwill, but I guess they figure if they last 100K miles, they're not THAT bad...

And of course if they covered the Seals but not the Labor, it wouldn't really matter I guess...
