Hi All,
I've been advised that the camshaft in my 728i is slightly worn due the fact the banjo bolt had come out and the spray bar had not been functioning properly under the car's previous ownership. Its fine for now, minimal wear but I'm wondering that when it does need to be replaced that might be a good time to have the head rebuilt.
The question is should I opt for having the original head rebuild or just buying a replacement/exchange? If I am to rebuild it, should I look at any modifications?
All opinions and advice welcome, many thanks
T
I prefer to have the original items rebuilt, whenever possible. Stock castings are pretty nice, no real beneficial modifications to do anything with the casting. Make sure the guides are tight and have the valves to the seats redone. Easy stuff. I paid $300 USD in labor for this, plus the parts needed. This included skimming the cylinder head and upper timing cover 0.005". When you are this far in, you really should replace the timing chain guide and tensioner rail with the front main seal. This requires pulling the oil pan in my experience, not difficult.
For the cost of that, you should consider picking up a nice 3.2L or 3.4L motor to drop in from a rusted car if you have the means to do this. I am not saying the 2.8 is bad, just the extra power is always welcome.
Lastly, install these - http://www.nmia.com/~dgnrg/banjo.htm never fret about the oil bolts backing out ever again!
I make E23 parts.
