    So what's a fair market value for such a E38? $10k?
It's an iL Sport so not as desirable as a short sport. I'd peg it at $8500, which is about double KBB, but worth it for a well kept example.

You don't do kbb for a well kept car,
there is a guy on E39 section who bought 540/6 and he want to do a TCG job with timing light, A TIMING LIGHT?!
Oh aM Goodness ... he probably did his shopping by kbb lol

    yeah, forget KBB.

Recent comps for very low mile E38s are hard to come by. Brandon's near thievery excepted!.
When well-kept 150k+ examples are still getting $5k+, a 38k mile sport (i or iL) has to bring at least $10k.

This one had a fancier interior but over 110k more miles and no timing chain guides: http://bringatrailer.com/listing/2001-bmw-740il-sport/

    This was 3 years ago, but a 32k non-sport, pre-facelift shorty brought over $16k on Ebay: http://bringatrailer.com/2013/12/12/...1998-bmw-740i/

the top comment links a now-dead auction for a 29k miles 750iL sport that topped $18k.

My old rule of thumb when comparing used cars was ~$1k per 10,000 miles. Therefore a car with 40k miles should be worth (to me, at least) $6k more than a 100k miler, all else being equal. This doesn't work very well for E38s of course. Interiors and exteriors hold up very well to age, and maintenance makes a big difference.
Nevertheless, personally I'd still value E38 mileage at $500 per 10k miles.

I'd snap up that blue iL for $8500 in a heartbeat, and I need another car in my driveway like I need a hole in the head...

Normally I'd say you were right, except a 740iL Sport is NOT a short sport with a few extra inches of wheelbase. It's only a slight appearance package, not a performance package like the short Sports are, which is why the short Sports command more money than the iLs. A 38k mile Short Sport, in a desirable color combination, will bring over $10k easily, but not really over $15k. You can cut a third of the value off of it for being an iL. Now, the 750iL Sport is a different animal, as it's the top of the range and has performance and appearance to it's name, so it can command more money in the same condition.

And remember, things degrade on cars due to time more than mileage and a car that isn't used tends to degrade faster than one that is in many areas. You have to factor that into the cost, as Brandon has found out with his car: rubber, plastic, and trim components degrade from just sitting over time and can cost a lot to replace or renew.

I hear you, but after driving my '01 non-L sport for almost 2 years I would be fine with a iL sport.
Just don't frequently drive it hard enough to appreciate the tighter torque converter or higher dif that much.
And as much as I like the looks of the sport steering wheel, for cruising the 4-poster would be more practical.

The shadowline trim and M-Pars though, are essentials IMO.

That said, an iL would crowd my garage more than I'd like.

Yeah some parts degrade due to age as much or more than miles (like the inner fender liner that crumbled when I took it off to replace the WS washer pump last month), but the biggest thing with high miles is engine/trans, and a 38k mile example that's been regularly maintained is way more appealing than a 100k+ example.

I agree with some of your assumptions - some not so much. It depends where the car has spent it's time. Darth for instance has always been parked in a climate controlled garage even during it's 3 yrs. in CT., never driven in the snow and very few in the rain. It actually has not even been parked in the hot sun that often, I learned my lesson on that with my old '86 L7 and the leather dash. After a couple years
the leather had pulled out from every grill or vent on the dash.

The rubber and plastic on Darth is not brittle or at least I had not found any so far.

Funny CL story. I saw a 740 that I wanted to look at, maybe purchase. I called the number and it said " this number cannot accept incoming calls" . Ok, sent a email, stating phone problem, and asking him to call me if its still avaiable. He writes back telling me to "get f××ked". I mailed him back on his inovative selling technique. Why in the world do some people act this way. Wow, just wow.
Lets get the party started before it's my bedtime.

Officially out of the E38 game. Sold the beast yesterday. Been fun, going to miss driving a sedan.
I will keep active with BMW's, but just pulling parts and selling them on. I'll continue to post up stuff here.

I'd be inspecting this car if I hadn't just purchased my 01. Appears very clean and low mileage 2001 750il.
DC area. Always skeptical of dealers, but a rare enough combo that it'd be worth a look for the right shopper.

I've put some feelers out for mine. I've gotten guesstimates of 8-12k if I put it back to stock, 6-10k as is with the rep Schnitzer stuff.

    - 150k, Cosmos Black w/Individual interior, rebuilt VANOS and guides, new driveshaft, new cooling system, new brakes.

When I decide what I'm doing with it, we'll have an idea. KBB is definitely worthless for 2001 Sports, be it 750iL or 740i.
