Question I can only access one module in INPA... any thoughts?

    Hi there,

I have a 2004 X3 (E83) and recently my check engine light came on. My old INPA installation somehow was on the Fritz so I reinstalled BMW Standard tools with INPA 5.0.6 and hooked up my cable to the car. I read out the fault code (some Tank vent issue, probably didn't tighten the gas cap properly) and deleted the codes.
    So far so good.
But then I also have had an airbag light that I hadn't gotten around to that has been on and also I wanted to look again into the whole Bluetooth connection thing so I went to the corresponding option in INPA and got a variant check fault, something about a group file not found.
So I tried something else and discovered that it's the same for all the other modules, I tested them all. Always the same kind of error. The only thing I can access is the engine MS45 and MSV80 menu and those seem to work fine.
I checked and all the .ipo files seem to be there in the C:\EC-Apps\INPA\SGDAT folder.

Why are only those two working? What am I missing, any thoughts anyone?

    Thanks!

Bridge pins 7&8 of your obd cable. Your car uses dual K-Lines for diagnostics.
    Problem fixed.

I just noticed that it does the same thing even without the adapter attached. It will load the engine module menu screen but when I go for example to airbags it says:

    "Variant checking
Group file: D_00A4, IFH-0018 initialization error. Program will be stopped!"

If it was the adapter it should at least load the module menu page in INPA, no?

Can you check on your INPA if it does that without the adapter connected?

    Thanks!

    That is normal.
No connection = no loading of modules.

    Do not complicate this.
Pin 7 of your OBD is K-line for engine,
Pin 8 is K-line for others.

Also you should be using MS45 for your engine only.

Alright, I took apart my adapter but pin 7 and 8 are already linked on the circuit board. I measured across the two pins and get continuity so it's not a bad solder joint at least not there.

I hooked it again up and same result, I get to MS45 which works fine but the other modules throw that error message.

Do you think the problem is hardware, software or user?

Btw, thanks I really do appreciate the support. This is new territory for me...

    Very unusual.

What cable are you using for diagnostics?

What chassis/car are you choosing in INPA? I like to choose X3 - Body - Airbag MRS as a test to see if you have access to other modules, on the other K-Line.

Are the pins in your car's OBD port all intact, at the same level/depth? (they do pop out here and there). Make sure the cable is pushed all the way in.

Here is a handy picture to help which cars connect which way. X3 is definitely pins 7&8 connected.

Well honestly I don't recall where I got the cable from exactly (I had bought it over a year ago when I was troubleshooting the car), but it was from a website recommended in a blog and was about $30 if I remember correctly. I will try to attach a picture.
Pin 4 and 5 are a little longer but they don't move and seem to be meant to be like that.

In INPA I always use E83. I tried pretty much any other module, airbag, transmission, telephone but it's always the same

I also just checked the plug in the car, the pin receptacles are all even and don't move.

So I think it has got to be a software issue at this point... my next step is to uninstall everything BMW and reinstall it. Unless you have a different suggestion?

Sorry, I was driving all day. Will have to give this some thought.

In your driver manager, what driver do you have installed on the obd cable, and what latency timer settings (advanced button)?

No worries, so latency is 1ms and driver is from FTDI version 2.12.24.0 dated 9/28/2016.

It came from one-stop-electronics.com and was recommended in one of the BMW forums for about $30.

Any more thoughts on this? I haven't gotten around to reinstall the whole shebang on my computer but that is my next move.

    Allthough I also

just noticed some oil in my coolant so I probably will be preoccupied with that for a bit...

Looks like the oil in the coolant was the result of accidentally reusing the wrong bottle as it turned out... so I guess at least that is good news....

So I reinstalled everything on a new laptop and now it works! Yay!
I'm not sure if it was my INPA install, my win 10 or both but now I can access all the modules.
    So case closed.

I have exactly the same issue here. In fact I was never able to solve this and decided to stick to ISTA-D which takes forever to load up and is quite boring. Can you recommend a manual to follow setting up INPA? Thanks.

    Hi vaska85,

I didn't have a good instruction myself, I downloaded "Mike's easy BMW tools" and it did it on its own.
If you Google that you should be able to find it.

Now I don't know why it didn't work the first time I tried but it was fine the second time.

    I think important is that:

    1. You have the files installed directly on your c: drive and not in a sub-directory and

    2. That your OBD2 adapter drivers are configured properly. You have to check with the adapter manufacturer you are using.

That last one was also a problem I had done wrong when installing the drivers and it didn't work properly.

    Hope that helps...
