LOL. im not planning on really sending my stock s52 that hard right away anyways.
Absolutely ask away. I used the OE Kolb main bearings and same for rod bearings. The main caps are being reused. I got OE because honestly the old main bearings I took out with 190k looked almost perfect. Don't see a reason to upgrade. The rod bearings did have some wear but that was to be expected.

I cracked the cylinder 5 piston due to rings overheating and butting. Broke the ringland and all. Figured I have to remove it all to repair might as well do a full build and not worry about it with the power id like to make. This is still the original S52 block and crank but freshly decked and bored to 87mm.

    More progress this week.

Rings gapped to .019 top and .022 2nd. Piston & Rod combo installed.. what a pain in the ass. The C clip holding the wrist pins into the piston is a real pain to install without gouging the whole piston. But I finally got it all done and everything is lubed and moving freely.

Rings installed in the proper orientation for first start as per JE spec sheet and lubed everything with conventional oil to help the first start.

New Kolb standard rod bearings installed.
Rod bearing clearance plastigauged and within spec.

Customized the pan baffle to clear the ARP mains.
And the rotating assembly is now rotational ftw!

I put a bunch more accessories on after staring at all these shiny new things. This is as close to a new engine as I'll likely ever get lol. Still waiting on head dowel pins and a new crank pulley bolt. Going to locktite and weld on the oil pump nut again but I realized I didn't put the damn dowel pins on for the pump. So gotta redo that.

Other than that it's business as usual and this Ho can breath fire!

Got the engine in the car and running this weekend. Runs smooth and no smoke or anything but making a loud ticking noise. Even after 30min of run time :/

Lifters were silent before pulled and I had them sitting in oil during this rebuild. So I'm ruling those out. Seems a little lower but not completely into the bottom end area. The noise seems more centered in the piston area. I can hear it pretty loud in the trans tunnel but could just be echoing.

Pulled plugs after running it and they all look good, piston tops look clean.

Borrowing a boroscope and looking more into it tonight.

I reeeeally hope it's something simple

Keep running it. Have you changed the oil yet? As long as your tune is ok, don't baby the car, the rings need to seat.

The engine has literally 30 minutes of run time. The driveshaft and exhaust is still out for other work I need to do so I can't drive it just yet. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to change the oil already though

Oil is cheap, drop the oil and run fresh oil. Bobby at Total Seal rings told me to run it hard and not to baby it so I did. The rings get seated right away this way. Youll know when they are seated, youll have less smoke and the motor will sound healthier.

Ive run this procedure in all 4 of the motors Ive built, no issues

Got a video of the first start. After reading all of that break-in procedure I'm not sure I want to start it anymore if thats the case. But what do you think of the noise?

Viewing cylinders shows pistons clean not damaged. Walls look good no scoring. Watching some similar videos on YouTube found one guy with a stretched cam cap stud causing a very similar noise. Any ideas or other things to check for before I pull the pan?

So retorquing the cam caps made no difference. But I went and took ny98m3's advice and changed the oil then just got it together to put some miles on it. Followed motomans write-up for the most part.

After the first wot pull the noise almost completely vanished. So I put another 20 miles or so on it of hard accel and decel and it's running great. I still hear a slight ticking at idle and low speeds and I think it's piston slap. Going to let it cool down tonight and hopefully it's quieter than it was on the cold start tomorrow.

I'm willing to live with it and hopefully some more mileage and abuse will let it find it's home so I can sleep a little better lol

Otherwise it runs smooth as butter. Holding 15psi so far without a hitch. It's rainy here tonight so I only did a dozen or so 3rd and 4th pulls and it didn't even hiccup.

Piston slap is worse when the engine is cold as the pistons expand and get tighter in the bore with heat.

The good news is the noise dropped almost entirely after the first pull even after full warm up. I'm going to put a ton of miles on it and hope it gets a little better once the rings seat officially.

Guess there's no other fix for this unfortunately. But I'm glad I didn't royally mess up lol

Cars been running great lately. Put a ton of miles on it and the engine is nearly silent getting better and better.

Ripped apart the Supercharged car I purchased and found the thing actually has a huge list of goodies that the seller didnt even mention or wasnt aware of.

Upon disassembly for the headgasket job I found it also has a Dinan Throttle body and Schrick cams! I plan on just fixing this SC car and now I'm debating swapping at least the cams into my turbo car here. I pulled some numbers off of them and they don't show up on any searches. How do I tell what duration Schricks these are?

These numbers don't show up in any Google searches but maybe someone can match to theirs?

Did the supercharged car come from a guy in western Mass? I sold my old schricks and 3.64 3 clutch lsd in 2010 to a guy with a supercharged M3 in western Mass. Think it was a 95 but never saw the car.

I got the supercharged car from bumf#ck CT. The PO owned it for at least 10 years and most of the kit was on it for about that long. It's a 99 and I just found out it already had an old mls .140 on it with ARPs. Going to replace with cutring & spacer kit and get it going soon.

My green car @ 14psi I'd put around the 500whp mark. I ran a 12.5 @125mph last year at NE Dragway

Great build. What are your power goals? 87mm bore makes me nervous haha

Also m52 and s52 is same exact block correct? Asking for boring purposes.....

I originally wanted 700whp but now I should be safe for a bit more. Don't really have a set number in mind. Yes the m52 and s52 are identical block castings besides bore

Can we all stop worrying about 87mm.

0.3mm less wall thickness isn’t going to change much.

The only real force is on the high side of the skirt. There is almost zero force on the thin area between the cylinders.

The cutring gaskets have zero issues sealing the cylinders till at-least 37psi; probably more I just haven’t tried higher yet.

At 700-800whp I’ll take the 0.2l over 0.3mm wall EVERY day of the week.
