Flywheel pinned with the #1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke.
You also need to put the cam lock blocks on bank 2.
The default position for the vanos (Inner section) is retarded, CCW.
See how far off the alignment hole in the trigger wheel is off, that will show you which direction.

    UPDATE:
Open bank 2 ....cam blocks, flywheel pin inserted.Use inspection hole ,trigger wheel has moved in retarded direction. I turned it clockwise, marking it beforehand....and see result on pic ...INPA says 0 deg. The degrees are already good.But.....I still have same error 33 Camshaft control, 34 Camshaft control bank 2....on live data VANOS angle don,t move? DME shut down the vanos, but why???I am confused, what to check?Maybe Solenoids?Wires...?Pls help.

Might be time to take both valve covers off and retime the engine.

Only valve covers or upper timing covers too?
And I have another question.....is it possible, if we assume that the vanos has moved slightly (1-2 degrees for example) when tightening, having previously been turned all the way to a full retarded position, and only because of this is the whole problem with deactivating it from the DME ?

Take both valve cover off. Pin the crank at TDC with the #1 cylinder on the compression stroke. The #1 cylinder intake and exhaust cam lobes will be tipped toward each other when that cylinder in on the compression stroke.
Put the cam lock blocks on both banks and see it the trigger wheels are in the correct position.

That's clear it will, but since Inpa says the shafts are at 0 degrees on both shafts doesn't that mean the wheels are in their correct position? Yes, will check everything again, but if the trigger wheels turn out to be in place (as Inpa says), what happens next? Re-time from scratch, respectively removing the upper covers of the chain?

When you get a code for the vanos the DME shuts down both of them, so maybe that’s why they both read 0?
If they were working you would see the readings change as you rev the engine.
Do what I suggested in post 107.

I will do this, but what happens if the wheels are still in the right position?

We’ll cross that bridge if we get to it.

I decided to do a complete re-engagement following the instructions in JimLev's video, turned the engine 4-5 times by hand and always the cam blocks fit perfectly. But when I decided to start the engine it was hard to start and ran very bad, I let it run and uploaded a diagnostic, the angles were fine on live data but there was a misfire and camshaft sensor bank2...I replaced the sensor but no change. I decided to open the hood and the Vanosa bolt had come loose and damaged the intake camshaft bed...The question is if I have bent valves and how can I check this without disassembly. I will replace the intake camshaft, retime the engine and what? When I opened it I saw that the intake camshaft was turned slightly to the left from its starting position, is it possible that I'm lucky and don't have bent valves?

I think the chances of bent valves is pretty high.

Remove both cams, all the valves on that bank will be closed.
Get a leak down tester so you can pressurize each cylinder thru the spark plug hole one at a time.
This will tell you what valves are leaking, those cylinder won’t hold air pressure.

So, I am latching on this thread as I am having the error code 34 = Inlet Camshaft control on Bank-2.

I have recently redid the timing chain and guides, and a few other parts replaced, and I am actually still testing the engine. The engine starts fine, but after a couple minutes of running idling, it goes rough, and error code 34 pops up.

INPA Error code 34 report shows: over advanced Vanos wheel with angle at minus -19 or -20 degrees.
So, short of re timing the whole engine, which I’d rather not do again, it seems that the solution would be :

-- Remove cooling belts, fan,.etc at front of engine.
-- Lock the crankshaft at TDC with with the flywheel pin (cylinder 1 on up stroke).
-- Remove Bank 2 valve cover.
-- Lock Bank 2 camshaft with the cam blocks.
-- Score the position of the Bank-2 trigger wheel.
    -- Loosen its nut.
-- Turn it CCW (counter clock-wise) by about 15 degrees, using a small pin in its inspection hole as a guide.
-- Put things back together and test.

Can anyone confirm the diagnostic, and the fix...

I also have another -unrelated ?- issue: the engine starts and dies off immediately with the MAF connected. I replaced the MAF with a new oem one, but still the same. So I am testing it with MAF disconnected. I think it is an unrelated problem to error 34,,..but ??

The fix is to set the timing correctly, following the directions, instead of hacking the trigger wheel to make up for a terrible job. Make sure all the t-chain slop is on the side where the tensioner can remove it.

And then do a smoke test of the intake /CCV system. Actually, while you have the covers off, you might want to check that the oil separator is correctly attached too.

Hello and sorry for revive this topic.

I have this error on my x5 4.6is and I dont know how to resolve this problem. The car is very slow until 3-3.5k rpm. I checked lower oil pan and no timing guide problem, checked solenoids and works good, also the camshaft sensors are good. I dont know when was done the timing or IF was done because i bought this car 2 weeks ago. What I need to check or from where i need to start ? Thank you so much ! I changed the oil and filter and all looks great and clean!

With 223k (miles or km?) it probably need guides.

If the guides have been done in the past they are most likely fine.
What you don’t know is how accurate the timing tools were. Were they BMW, Koch, GAS, or some cheap eBay junk.
I’ve helped others that had similar problems using eBay junk.
If the tools are slightly off it may pass the DME tests when the engine is started but down the road 10/20K miles they may just be enough out of spec to fail the startup test.

And you recommend me to re-timing the engine? I don't know if vanos is ok or not! Didn't rebuilt it ! IF i put ista/inpanor bmw scanner can i check if vanos are in specs ?

The car do exactly like you said .. if i clean the errors the car run perfect first 1-2km and then check engine light and no power! The engine sounds perfect, no bad sound or something

You’ll need to clear the codes or the DME will disable the vanos.
After you clear the codes you can use INPA to look at the vanos to see if it is working.

Second one is at 3000 RPM
