I am in need of some help. I just picked up a beautiful 2002 325i with only 115k miles for $300. The catch was that the previous owner was in the middle of replacing the head gasket and is currently completely disassembled. He had already purchased all the new parts including water pump head bolts and gasket kit. All I need to do is reassemble it. I have done other head gaskets on other vehicles before but never on a bmw and especially not one that I didnt tear down myself. Car is in great shape so I figured I couldnt go wrong with $300 bucks. I am going to buy a service manual and was wondering which would fit me best for this type of job since I will need help figuring out where all parts and bolts go. Chilton, haynes, TIS or bentley? or do any of you guys have a detailed DIY. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks
You are going to need the cam timing tools also if you don't have them already.

If it was overheated the head bolt threads in the block sometimes pull out when you re torque them. I always loosen them and then re torque them to spec before I remove the head. If any pull out you will know before you are trying to put it back together and end up ruining your new gasket and bolts.

+1 to Randy. Why was the head off the motor? Meanwhile, the Bentley is prolly your go-to bible here.

The guy I bought from said the car was overheating, had gasses coming out of the coolant and white smoke out of the tail pipe. He already had the head inspected by a machine shop and cleaned. I'm going to double check the flatness of the block before I proceed. Thanks guys. Thanks john I will probably go with the Bentley. You guys know of any places to get the Bentley for cheap besides eBay?
