    Limited Slip Differentials

Which cars are good donors for LSDs? I am looking for a 315 for my 97. Are there several that will work?

No, there is only one real "donor" and that is the early E32 750iL 3.15 limited-slip.

I found mine on Craigslist for around $200 and I have seen these in the pick-your-part self serve junkyards. Knowing how the market has gone with these, I wish I had taken the time to pull some.

I saw Olin's post on the install and I copied him. I didn't do the installation myself but it was well worth the expense. Really good bang for the buck.

I noticed the same problem a few weeks ago, BUT if you google for a repair and put Bimmerforums in the search too, I can find them that way,,, but not by going directly to the link where they used to be displayed. its odd.
I swear, my cars are like a girlfriend.
Sometimes its a rough ride, sometimes its smooth motorin'.
Sometimes she doesnt like how i treat her and sometimes i dont like how she behaves.
BUT at the end of the day, she loves it when I am inside her.

    Was it also 210mm case?
I thought only e34 M5 and some euro 540 had large case the rest e34 had medium.

Can you elaborate on this? How does the euro market car differ from a North American market car?

    Here in Europe e34 535 has typ 210, that's a fact. Also most e32 has typ 210

Don't know american cars but sure feels weird if they are eguipped with something else.

Yes, correct. In fact, i could select one coming from an 750 E32 (3,15 LSD if i remember correctly ) or the 3,64 LSD from an E34 535is i currently have. Both of them were direct fit for my car ( 90 850iA )

I put a 3.64 LSD from an E32 750Li in my 97 840. I'm very happy with it. A 3.15 might be a better choice for Interstate cruising, but I'm mostly on city and country roads where the 3.64 is ideal.

Yes, 3.64 ratio is perfect for an 840. Most 840 owners install open 3.64 diff found in 850i, congrats on finding 3.64 LSD they are very rare!

    So a 188mm medium case 3.64 differential from an E32 or E34 will fit my 97 840?

3.64 is pretty nuts in an 840. You will forget that the car is over 4k lbs.

That's a big NO. Mounting points are wrong. What you need is a 210mm 3.64 out of 850i.

Is the 3.64 that much better than the open diff that's current installed even if it's not a limited slip? What changes as you go from a 3.15 to a 3.64? I suck at gear ratios. Have no clue honestly. I don't even know what's currently installed in mine... All I know is that it is not an LSD. At least it's not pulling up in the options list.

Make sure it is in fact an LSD. I made that mistake recently, just assumed it was an LSD because it was a 3.64. YMMV, I'm a moron.

It will make the car feel alot lighter and 0-60 acceleration will be much improved. Basically it will put a big grin on your face
3.64 LSD are close to impossible to find and they are expensive compared to 3.64 open so I suggest looking for a 3.64 open.
I have a very low mileage one 48k miles, but not letting it go cheap, $900 plus shipping.
