Hi guys, I am ready to now swap an S54 Z3M cluster into my 98 328I with S54.
My DME was purchased already coded for the swap with proper deletes of unnecessary aspects and it had my chassis vin written to it. EWS is also turned OFF.
If I put this cluster into my car, I want it to reflect the chassis miles which are 165K. I know the cluster has an internal EPROM and also the CODE PLUG. SO
1. Can I take my 328I code plug from my cluster and put it into the S54 cluster and run the mileage update test #9 in the advanced features?
2. IF step one works, will it matter at all that the internal EPROM may still have the vehicle info on the Z3M it came from?
3. Am I missing anything obvious or am I talking lightly about something that is much more in depth?
What I've found from reading is the S54 Z3M is still considered an E36. ALL E36's allow you to hold the cluster reset and turn key to radio to access special features 1-15. #9 being the mileage update where you hold the reset for 4 seconds and it updates the cluster to the highest value between the internal eprom and the CODE PLUG.
final considerations. The part number for my CODE PLUG is different that that of the Z3M cluster. Though they are different they interchange over a few different models that use the same engine. For example, mine is used in the E36 318i with M44, the Z3M uses the same as the 318Ti with the M44?
Any help is appreciated. I would simpluy swap my plug over to the new cluster, but I dont want to erase, ruin or break either of the two clusters / info.
Just to fill you guys in, the coding plug is NOT plug and play. To update the mileage it appears you need to rewrite the Eeprom. I will post how when I figure it all out.
The cluster, however, will work fine when you wire it in and add CAN +/-
PA Soft 1.4 should work on that cluster, no?

I honestly have no idea. I was getting into rom raider a little (E36) but then I went S54 and I have no idea what programs to get yet.
Does pa soft 1.4 access the cluster via the DME / OBD plug?
If I had my PA Soft handy (loaned out at the moment), I would try it on my 2000 Z3, which has the instrument cluster a bit like the E46 cars.
You would have to use it with a 20-pin adapter (if diagnostics wired the same like Z3), but instrument cluster on E46 derived Z3s are all readable without ADS/Serial connections.

Not sure if my Carprog will do it over diagnostics port, but I can check when I have a chance.
If not, the Carprog would do it for sure if I used the EEPROM clip, but that means taking the cluster apart to reach EEPROM.
