Exclamation 2005 X3 No Heat in Winter or Only Works Sometimes Helpppp

I have a 2005 BMW X3 3.0. Only owner. Bought it brand new. Had it ever since. My issue is just with the heat. Started last winter. Live in Chicago. So it gets cold here. Lol. It happened a few times last year and then it worked great until about 2 weeks ago. I'll get in the car and turn the heat on and nothing will come out of the vents. I can usually feel a tiny, tiny bit of warm air if I stick my hand over the vents, but nothing really blowing out. Then occasionally the heat will just start blowing full blast on its own. (I keep it set on full blast, so it comes out at that setting and once it starts working I move it up and down to see if it is responsive). I've noticed in the past few days though, that unlike last year, the problem is increasingly more frequent. The heat almost never comes on at all in the past week and if it does, it will sometimes blow in and out at different intensities on its own, like it is possessed or struggling or something. It seems to work fine in warmer temps but when it's 40degrees or below it won't turn on. The display is on but nothing coming from vents. Only defroster for rear window works.

I just had an oil change and they said my air filter was beyond dirty. Would that have anything to do with it? I didn't purchase there because they said it was $135US. My neighbor said he can purchase for 30 and install for free. Very simple. I could even do it but he thinks it may be a loose wire. Sometimes heat would come on when I went over a bump or the railroad tracks. Idk. Someone let me know if this is a relay switch, fuse possibly? I know it's not the thermostat or the motor itself as it does work intermittently and ALWAYS works in the warmer seasons. Just works intermittently in the cold weather. So strange. Thx guys. -Qweenie from Chicago

Sounds like classic symptoms of a failed blower motor resistor. Take a look at this video on how to repair:

Thank you so much "91e34M5". I really appreciate it. I forwarded the info and video to my mechanic. You're the best and I'm sure that's what it is. I'll keep you posted as to what the resolution is when completed. -Qweenie from Chicago

I have not had this problem with our X3, but I have had to replace the blower resistor in two other BMW's that I have owned. This is a common problem pretty much for all BMW's. Our X3 has 164,000 miles and it had 58,000 on it when we purchased it in 2010. It's been a great vehicle.

Oh ok. Yeah it's a great vehicle. I don't think I'll ever own a different brand. I had a Mercedes C230 Kompressor Manual before the X3 and what a difference. I'm a BMW-Lifer for sure.
