You make a strong case Jim! Well, you and Robert.
Don't forget big block Leo too.
A good read.....

I think the salt is very well rinsed off the roads after the flooding rains we've had the past several days, probably going to have to take this beast out for a spin today!
I know right. Finally all the salt is gone! So, whats your plans for the 540 turbie?
98 540i 6, 525 whp, 120 mph 1/4, V3 Si S/C'er @16 psi, W/A I/C, Water/Meth, Supersprint Headers, HJS Cats, 3" Custom Exhaust, UUC Twin Disc, Wavetrac LSD, GC Coil Overs, Monoball TA, AEM FP, Aeromotive FPR, AEM Failsafe AFR/Boost, Style 65's w/275's, M5 Steering Box, Eibach Sways, M3 Shifter, Evans Coolant, 85 Deg Stat, PWM Fan, 10" Subs, B.A. speakers, Grom Aux/BT, Still Rolling as my DD!
Not really sure at all! Gotta stick some new tires on the rear of it obviously. Beyond that everything is a bit string of question marks.
Kind of nice to have this beast out on the road again!:

Oh, and by the way Jim, I grabbed this a few days ago:
LM7s.jpg
LM7s, as power this thing:
And this:
Ooh, looks like a couple of LS vortec engines? What are you planning to do with them?
They have pretty stout lower ends. With the cast blocks they can really take a lot of boost and a good beating.
Your car looks real nice.
My '33 will be here this Tuesday, can't wait. Got a bunch of guys from our local car club (not BMWCCA) coming over to give me a hand.

That's excellent Jim, I can't wait to see your new car come together!!
One of my new engines is going in the LRS as soon as I can stuff it in there. The fate of the other one is currently undetermined, but at $275 COMPLETE, I figured I should probably take at least two.
TWO for $275? Bargain of the year!
The LRS will have a new heart, you going to spool it up?
Sorry Jim, bad writing on my part. Each engine was $275 complete with accessories, harness and ECU. Amazing to me!
And of course I am going to slap a snail on there ASAP. I really can't have anything without a turbo other than my old dogvan that I purposely leave 100% stock.
I still have the GT45 I modified at the beginning of this thread sitting on a shelf. It will be a perfect starter turbo for the LRS-LS project. I have a nasty camshaft on its way to go in the engine, so I will need to stick with turbos that are biased toward turbine flow like that GT45 is, otherwise the system probably won't be too happy with the gnarly cam.
And yesterday I started this again to run the LRS-LS engine:
LRS-LS MS3X.jpg
Resistors and diodes done, and started on the capacitors. Good start.
Still a bargain. A snail and cam....should easily make over 500HP. That poor LRS isn't going to know what hit it.
Its gonna need some big meats on the back.
LS taking over! Hard to argue though! Looking forward to both these projects!

I think I saw a 5.3 cam test somewhere, in which an engine like this with a cam and valvesprings, and not much more made something like 464hp on an engine dyno. I don't remember exactly, but it was pretty impressive, so yeah, it should make over 500whp through the sloppy TH400. The LRS is my partner in crime, it will love the excessive dumbassery.
Jim, what is your new car projected to weigh with the LS3 (?) and 4L65e in it?
Oh, one more thing Jim! Robert drafted you into a group electronics tinkering project from some Electronic Det Cans that transmit wirelessly from the engine compartment to the receiver in the car where the driver is wearing the headphones. I made a set with a wire running inside the car about nine years ago now, (see this thread).
Last night when we were discussing ignition table tuning it struck me that we might be able to take this concept a step forward in terms of convenience and use a wireless transmitter for the knock sensor signal using something like this:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/FM-Transmit...UAAOSwDEtaOy98
Yeah, at 2400# that sucker is going to FLY!! Hunting AMGs in it won't even be sporting.
Wireless knock sensing, pretty neat stuff. I never heard of EFI Univ.
I did buy a wired sensing tool about 10-11 years ago called Chassis Ear. It has 6 clips each with a microphone. You clip it on to whatever and then run the wires into the amplifier box inside the car. It has a 6 position rotary switch you can pick out the mic's one at a time to listen to them on full cup headphones. Best to have someone else driving when you are using it, unless your on some low traffic back road.
I'll let the AMG's stay close for a few seconds.
That white Fox body was blowing everything away. Always nice to see a Ford with a Chevy mill in it.
Some of the car club guys here thought I should be putting a Ford engine in my '33....not gonna happen.

This thing is pretty close to finished, well, close to as finished as I am going to make it anyway. Today I added a fun-have knob you can see in this pic at the top of the passenger side of the radiator. It sends a regulated amount of boost to the top of the wastegate diaphragm. Speeds up spool time a little bit too, not that it was a problem before.

Sure wish I would have taken this picture with something other than a crappy cell phone potato cam... Lol

I'm keeping it until someone waves a sufficient number of hundred dollar bills in my face! Haha.. I like crappy cars. This one ain't me.
Thad, looks real nice, I'd keep it unless there are many many $100 bills floating your way.
How you making out on the LS project?
I've got a lot done on the '33 in the last 3 days, will have to update my post soon.
Thanks Jim!! I'm not sure about "many many," but it will probably require close to 100 hundred dollar bills at this point. Lol. If I still have the car later in the year, I'll probably do another phase of stuff to it. Hard to know exactly what that might entail at this point.
My LS project is coming along fantastically. Honestly, I have never been inside an engine that makes more sense. It's pretty amazing, and kind of makes me feel like a dope for fighting against it for so long. I should have the nasty cam in, along with the valve stem seals and springs today, so I can mate it to the TH400 I built. I plan to slap the chopped up GT45 from the beginning of this thread onto it and make some power.
Definitely catch up that thread of yours, the slushbox LS crew needs repping! Haha
Looks awesome T. Clearly there's just something about the E39 or that car that just doesn't fully tickle your bone, which is a shame, that thing is VERY cool! Its great that you've gotten it to a high degree of completion vs having moved it to somebody else in partial state like you were talking about before. Lucky for us you keep talking about selling it but it keeps not happenin'... for our sake I hope you don't have any luck for a long time

I'm good with it either way it goes, honestly. I like building stuff, and I like doing stupid things behind the wheel. If anything, I think the E39 chassis just handles the power REALLY well, and kind of mutes out some of the dumbassery level, which I don't prefer. But having said that, I have been really enjoying hopping in it for errands, and I took it for about a 5 hour road trip the other day to confirm the gasoline tune is on point, and that the car is solid for a long trip (it is, and it is). I haven't been putting any effort into selling it, but there is a forum member who is interested.
If I do end up with the car for a while longer (meaning into the summer), when I have time to work on it some more I will give it a quieter exhaust, and setup some sort of tablet dash from the MS3X, getting rid of the gauges I still have sort of temporarily attached to the steering column. Also, now that I have a really good gasoline tune for it I will probably set it up for flex fuel, using table blending between the E85 and gasoline tunes, and I'll incorporate boost control based on ethanol content too. It will be a cool project on one of my cars, which could be the 540.
And if I end up keeping it really long time, eventually I will pop the engine out to either go through it a bit, or cave into the LS swap hankering if it has worked out as well as I suspect with the LRS. Time will tell! For now it's a very nice, great handling, great riding, semi-hoonigan, daily driver. And I like it.
Me thinks 100 $100 bills would be a steal seeing everything you've put into the car. Keep it and drive the wheels off it.
A lopy cam would be good in your (and my LS), good intimidation factor when your at a set of stop lights. I keep thinking about it but really need to get the car finished before I start pulling a 0 mile engine apart.
Will update my build tomorrow.
