Finally got around to checking whether M performance exhaust tips I had would fit my M2. Short answer is they don't. Broke out the digital calipers and measured the stock M2 tailpipes without finishers. It has a 2.75" od and 2.66" id with a wall thickness of .044" The M performance tips need a tailpipe with a 2.5" id. Why the engineers at BMW did not spec the smaller pipe so their performance tips could be used is beyond me, but there you are.
Was thinking of getting 2.75 od to 2.5 id exhaust adapters and having a muffler shop put them on properly if I want to use the titanium tips but the standard chrome tips are fine for now. Anyone do this surgery to use performance tips?
They likely have a smaller inner diameter because its the inner diameter that dictates exhaust flow, and for the higher performing engine in the M2 they likely needed better flow. I can't imagine that modifying them to a smaller diameter pipe would be good for the car, most people modifying exhausts go bigger not smaller (for a reason). Perhaps look at other tips that may work for this application...
