Been an Acura drive for 10 years, I'm looking at buying a 2007 X5 (77,000 mi) tomorrow.
Is there any common things I can look for, or expect? I hear so much about BMW having more
problems but if your a handy guy is it really that big of a deal?
Thanks so much in advance
Being in the same situation, i know how problematic it can get...

Look for these as far as I know:
-Engine oil leak
-coolant leak
-water pump (old, new, replaced?)
-tensioner belt replaced ?
-coolant expansion tank cracked?
-windshield washer pumps work? (Front, rear and headlight washer if applicable)
-check all lights- brake, xenon, headlights, daytime running lights, tailgate....)
-brakes.....pads,oil,....
-also check the idrive---tells you alot of info. If there is any malfunction
-look for all the tools and the spare tire in the trunk
-check the camera, vicinity sensors (or whatever they are called)
-tires, are they Run-flat-tire or not. (It says RFT on the tire if so)
-key fobs. You must receive two of them. Make sure they are functional (expensive. Up to $400)
-Look for the owners manual in the glove box. If not, can cost you $40-50. You can always have a PDF version tho.
-inspect the wipers, and switches
-inspect and try iut all the switches on the seats, mirrors and steering wheel
Some of the repairs are DIY. Some not. Those which are not DIY, will be expensive.
Maintenance of bimmer is expensive. Be careful.

You can do a quick search on this site to provide the list of potential common issues, basically they very by engine choice.
6 cylinder (3.0) has some common emission control and oil separator issues.
V8 has a variety of leaking seals and gaskets.
Diesel has other issues with emission control tanks and tubing.
Transmissions and transfer cases may (will) start being problematic at that mileage depending on care and prior owner abuse.
Electrical package and control units give some fits and have required reflashing of programs or data packages.
If prior owners kept up with more often than factory recommended maintenance, they should be as reliable as the Honda family of vehicles.
To do the troubleshooting a proper diagnosis computer package for late model BMW specifically is required.
The mechanical repairs and things like fluid changes are like any other high performance car, not difficult for the competent DIYer.
Try to get maintenance records so you can see where that car sits.
I love my 07 4.8l, plenty of power, reasonable fuel

Thanks a lot guys, It was the salesman's day off today So I'm going to make a deal tomorrow.
I gave it a test drive, engine sounded really smooth (3.0), Didn't hear any chatter from the axle, I did notice shifting manually made the car lurch (like when some pops a clutch on a manual) not sure what that's about or if that's normal-ish. Best mpg I could get on the test drive was 23mpg. I don't expect it to get 40 like my acura, but I though the 3.0L would get a bit better gliding on a flat road. I guess not?
Other than that it's good to hear If you're handy (im very) that bmw's can be not so bad.
Thanks again,
Did you buy the vehicle? Updates?
