Just bought a 2015 X1 xDrive28i and am still getting used to the features.
Have been driving a 2003 M3 during the summer months for years now, but the features are pretty outdated compared to the newer BMW's. I noticed that the auto start/stop function is on by default, which is fine. I see the off button. However, when it's on, it shuts the engine off at a stop inconsistently. Sometimes I'll drive and it will shut off at a red light or stop sign every time. Other times, I will get an indication on the dash of the start/stop logo with a diagonal line through it and the engine remains on. Does this mean start/stop is turned off, even though I have not manually turned it off? Does the feature turn itself off in a certain environment or configuration?
Any input would be very helpful. I'm not thinking something is broken, but am simply looking to learn more about the vehicle.
Thank you!
One more thing: Does eco mode being on of off affect this? Anyone out there see a noticeable difference in fuel economy using eco mode?

To address your Eco mode question - I saw a HUGE difference when driving a 328 loaner from the dealership for a few days - a buddy drove from Los Angeles to Palm Springs (roughly 110 miles) in a similar 328 and reported getting an average of 43 mpg on the freeway.

The X1 manual covers exceptions to when the auto stop will not turn on. For example:
- external temp too low
- interior not yet heated or cooled as much as desired
- engine not at operating temp
- steering wheel is being turned
- after driving in reverse
- low battery charge
- hood is unlocked
- etc.
