    WTB: 740i

Looking to get a winter car because I will be putting my M3 in storage for the winter. Sold my E34 which was an awesome car so I want to change things up. Not looking for a showroom condition car since it will be driven in the winter in Ohio so I am not looking to spend a lot. Ideally I would like a Sport model but I am open to hear what you guys have. Minor body imperfections are fine but would prefer the engine be mechanically sound and serviced since I need it to run properly in freezing temperatures.

Prefer 740i Sport, Looking to spend no more than $3000 on a decent condition vehicle but would like to spend less since it's a winter beater, Heat and Defrost must work properly and willing to travel 500 miles of Ohio.

Let me know what you guys have!

    Thanks,
    Rob

I'm open to all E38's. I'm just trying to get something different this time. How much are you asking for it and where is it located?

I have a 2001 shorty but it's not a sport. I have not advertised it yet. I bought it as a project car as the engine was leaking everywhere. All the engine work is done. Sealed everything from valley pan up. Also new OSV, CCV, timing guides and rebuilt vanos. Kid who had it before me has LED brake lights, poor tint job and a few other minor things I have been working on as I have time. Steering is heavy but I know it just needs new o-rings at the servotronic. We see many of these. Only thing that will cost a little money is the MKII unit in the trunk is bad. This causes the screen in the dash to be black and the radio cuts off every few minutes. I had planned to upgrade to MKIII or IV if I kept the car. Just been watching for an MKII to come up for sale cheap somewhere as it is now. New rotors/brakes and tires are fair. I would feel comfortable driving it anywhere. Interior is good. Has one burn hole in the drivers seat that is probably from the heating element shorting out. The material is off the sunroof slide but the material is in the trunk. Can't think of anything else but again, came to this forum to check on a new member and saw your post so going on memory at the moment. Would take $2k the way it sits now. If I finish everything on the car I will start it at $3500 since the engine work is done and all the major engine issues common to the E38 have been addressed.

Last 7 of VIN DN82420 if you want to look at the options.

Sorry for taking so long to respond, I was actually working something out on a sport model but it sold before I could make the drive to check it out. I have brought my search in a little closer now so jersey might be a little far for a drive for me. MO is also too far of a drive for me.

I'm still looking and hoping to find something soon as I thought that other car would have been a done deal.

If you can do $4K I have a 2000 740i Sport that runs and drives superb, in Indianapolis. Only non functional items atm are rear passenger window and glovebox latch. I bought it in June for $1500 with a busted trans, and since then have rebuilt trans, lots more, have over $2500 in reciepts. New: front control arms, tie rods, idler and drag link, radiator, PCV, reman ABS module, PS hoses, trans thermostat, rebuilt HCV, new heater hoses, and of course coolant, engine oil, and ATF are all fresh. New headliner too. Since the work I have 2K miles going back and forth to Chicago/Indy plus weekends around town (I have a company truck). PO installed new battery and alternator. Drives great, pixels work, heat works, air conditioning works, and is a genuine Short Sport. Orient blue over sand beige. Has complete toolkit, and mpar spare. Clear title in hand.

Not advertised anywhere, and I love the E38, but I happened upon a local V8 XC90 with a blown motor that I would prefer instead (yes, I'm serious, we have a working one and I LOVE it, want another). Let me know if interested and I can send pics.

I might be interested if the original poster isn't. I had my '01 short sport stolen in March and miss it badly. My DD IS NOW AN '88 535is...which is fun but is no e38. Any photos?

Pics are about a month old. Has the deep weather tech fitted rubber mats front and rear. No rips in leather. Last 8 of the VIN are DN80490. Not sure whether the VANOS has ever been rebuilt (doubt it) but it's quiet on cold start unless the car sits for over a week, and even then it's not more than a sec or so. Does not smoke, runs strong. Valve cover gaskets also were changed by PO (plug wells are clean/dry, forgot to mention in prior post).

Only fluids i haven't yet changed are brake and rear end, everything else is fresh. Sunshades work, rotors and pads are good, after refreshing the front LCA's I had a 4 wheel alignment at the BMW specialist next to Zionsville Motorsport, they confirmed the rest of the suspension is fine.

Transmission got new A drum clutches and steels, all others were good and got reused on advice from a number of ZF specialists. I got got all OEM rebuild parts for the transmission from Eriksson, except a used A drum hub (when the A drum failed it marred up the hub, I wanted a clean one). Aftermarket parts are a revised A drum with stronger snap ring groove, and TransGo main pressure regulator correction kit (which addresses what breaks the snap ring groove on the A drum). Eriksson also rebuilt the stock torque converter which is the higher stall version.

I buffed the car with M101 then M205, it has a scratch and ding here and there but looks great for a 16 year old car, except the dull PS front fender which I planned to respray in the spring, but it matches, it's just the clear coat is a bit rough. Front bumper shadow line trim is pitted, I have spot putty and SEM paint to re do it but got stopped from any painting by the cold. I have a spreadsheet detailing nearly all parts bought with a tally of the cost, I also have most if not all receipts. Mileage is 171K.

Please let me know what else you want to know, I want you to have as accurate an idea of the condition before you drive over since it's not exactly across town.

Any knowledge of timing chain guides or tensioner work?

No knowledge of any work to the timing guides or tensioner, I would guess they are original. I planned on at least changing the tensioner for posterity since its so easy and cheap, but its so quiet even on startup I don't see an issue. I haven't even dropped the front pan to check for plastic, though I do have the gasket ready but there's under 2K on the oil so that will wait for the next oil change.
