Save your money for all the oil leaks that are coming....and air suspension failures, if equipped. And broken cooling parts. They are coming, and the oil leaks will hurt.

So basically this engine is bad in general? Should I just buy a new car?
NOx is really only an issue in CA and states that adopt California ARB emission regulations

Just enjoy what you have for what it is. When you see lots of oil loss...just sell it and get something more suitable for modifying.

Just bought an '09 4.8i... am crushed. Was hoping I could turbo without getting the xDrive50i. Am I correct that boost is only available through Supercharger, and not really worth it, or?
Just get a 50i, it's like maybe $5-7k more, and comes with a nicer CIC infotanment system and the nicer LCI bumpers etc. It'll be way WAY WAY cheaper than properly putting a turbo on an originally NA engine. Hell, even a 35i is as fast as a 48i stock, and put a tune on the 35i and it's way faster. The LCI E70 X5s are really a huge jump over the early E70s when it comes to drivetrains.
All of the 50i cars are hands down the best bag for the buck right now. You can get a 750li for under 20k. A tune only seems like it makes 550ish whp

Valve stem seals have sucked forever on the V8s (N62, N63, N63 TU). Seems to be a ~40-90k mi sure fire failure. Turbo coolant lines like to leak and are expensive as hell for OEM, but I'd probably just replace the rubber bits with silicone and hose clamps if it were me. Turbos tend to live about as long as on the I6's, so 100-180k mi before WG rattle or bearings let loose.
N62s had leaky alternator bracket gaskets, made a huge mess, not sure if N63s have the same thing.
Other than that, the usual BMW things - valve cover gasket, front timing cover gasket, crappy water pumps etc.
So you're saying they're a big ole pile?
Back into a BMW, this time a track rat....and it won't be BMW powered and no, not a V8 either!
Couldn't help myself, boosted e36 m52 street car in progress also!
