M62TU - Actual HP gains of 4" MAF and 4" intake - Dyno Sheet

    Hi guys,
So I finally wanted to test the actual gains of what a 4" maf and a 4" intake (short ram in this case, not the longer CAI even) would add to an M62B44TU.
    Vehicle:
2002 540i Sport Auto - converted to Manual
    M60 Intake Manifold
    Gutted pre-cats
    Deleted main cats
    Deleted Muffler
    Dinan Throttle Body
    Custom DUDMD Dyno tune

We did the baseline run at 237.9WHP, which was the best out of 5 pulls in the morning, so it was chilly out.
Right there and then on the dyno, we removed the factory air box and maf, installed the 4" VW MK4 MAF w/air straightener and a 4" intake pipe about 3-4" long to a 4" K&N air filter. So it was a very simple short ram intake, without even building a heat shield. We kept the factory plastic elbow pipe between the MAF and TB. Just removed the rubber spacer from it, and were able to stretch that tube over the 4" maf.

First run, the car ran extremely lean, and lost 20-40whp throughout the RPM range. Extremely lean conditions @ 15-18AFR, so I'd highly recommend to never install a 4" maf without doing a 4" maf tune first.

I then reworked the fuel mapping and RPM scales to control the fuel up to 6500rpm, as the stock tables only go to 6000rpm. No timing/vanos/torque/limiters maps were changed, only the fuel map was modified to bring the AFR at WOT back to the same mixtures as it did on the stock MAF tune @ 13.0AFR.

Here's the results after a few hours of testing and working out the fuel map.
Gains start at 4750RPM and keep going up higher and higher. Peak WHP came up almost 9WHP, and the max WHP gains were 22WHP at 6500RPM.

Conclusion: If you're after every last HP, for around $200 you can pick up decent HP, especially up top.

For those that want to claim the really WHP numbers from a full bolt on and tuned M62tu, please take a look at a bone stock 540i6 M62TU with a muffler delete on my dyno.

218 to the wheels? Geeeez. A 2015 Camry has more HP.

Time to buy an "Old 'N Slow" decal for the back.

Next time you're in town, lets see if the 740i beats the 218whp 540i6 baseline.
If 286hp dynos at 218whp, imagine what my sl65 puts out to the crank with 602whp on my dyno. But I'll be shooting for 750-800whp on pump gas after a new wave of upgrades this winter. Going for a 1200hp trans upgrade and a pair of precision 5858 turbos.

Hey DUDMD it is Kenny from Facebook thanks for putting things in prospective for me the other night. Even though you stated that my custom tune has the most aggressive timing. I think I am in the 14 range at wot on my tune. I think that is what they told on my last dyno pull when I just had the 4" maf and before my throttle body and m60 manifold. I think I could benefit from adjust my air fuel ratio at wot.

Here's what happens if someone to install a 4" MAF without getting a tune.
Extremely lean fuel mixtures and excessive loss of power.

We'll dyno it after doing guides. Hopefully by the end of 2016.

My 01 7er put out 242hp and 286hp on the dyno. Had shudder in reverse for the torque converter as well.

I went to a group dyno. It was back in 2011, so I don't have anything handy.

No problem. 5 years ago is quite some time.

Did you just adjust KRKTE & KLAMFA ( maybe LAMFAVL)
