Ok. I guess the only way for me to see how this is going to work out is to install the sucker and go rip on it.
Power sliding, drifting. Who cares. My goal is to be sideways and as sideways for as long as possible while going as fast as possible and still hitting a reasonable line. Whatever that is, that's what I want to do.
As to the spinning, you're just going too fast.

i was dragging my feet on the angle kit too. A few guys in the local scene I talked to said from what they saw, I was pushing the car past where any amount of "skill" could keep me from spinning out because of the angles and speed of our track here. I'd either have to go in with less angle (lame) or less speed (also lame). That's what convinced me to add angle. My only "power adders" (if you can call them that) are an ebay chip, ebay intake, open headers, fan delete, and a 3.91 diff.

I don't know about you guys, but putting my balls on the wall feels really cold. I don't like it. But I do enjoy drifting while my balls are on said wall.
I should stop drinking so much.

One month update: Went to the drag strip for the hell of it the other night. Still rocking the original slushbox 4L30e.
To summarize the events, I started off with doing my burnout and launch in 2nd gear, then making a slow shift through 3rd gear directly to 4th, since 3rd gear cannot hold boost. Even with 60ft times over 2.1 seconds like this, and coasting a good chunk of the way down the track waiting for the trans to find 4th gear, it ran a best ET of 13.3, and best trap speed of about 106mph.
After that I started trying to see if I could get it to launch in 1st gear so I could see how it would change things having to allow for all of the shifts. It was a mess. One time the trans went into limp mode because of too many revs during the burnout, and it ran a 14.something, at almost 108mph, haha..
And then finally I managed to get everything preloaded decently against the footbrake and handbrake in 1st gear. Build 5psi on the converter, and then when I released the brakes to launch, it went BANG. Snapped the left axle like a twig. Probably the crappy old 18" Michelin run flat tires I had on the back for drift burners didn't help anything with respect to the axles.
Luckily, thanks to the welded diff, I was able to drive the ~60miles home with one non-broken axle.
Good times had by all except the axle. Now I have some more really stupid ideas of what to do to this car over the winter, lol. Love this car!
Well done!
i followed a friend home once over 100 miles driving home doing one-wheeled burniuts because he wrecked an axle but had a welded diff

He ended up needing tires and a diff by the time we got home. Lol
always trying to make it lighter and faster

I'm probably lucky I didn't have anyone following me home (i.e. a ride home), because I was sort of forced to keep it cool and not create any more carnage.
I love the way you abuse this old girl, and she just keeps loving it.
Wow, that sums it up PERFECTLY!!
I even took this sucker off-roading a couple of times just for the hell of it. And rally driving on the gravel roads out through the farm areas, MAN WHAT A BLAST!
By comparison the 540 is like a hot but "good girl". Nice to show up somewhere with, and fun to a point, but too many limitations and boundaries haha.
Just for the sake of documentation, I wanted to say that the 4L30e is pretty much history. It hung tough through a tremendous amount of fun times when I was careful not to shift it in boost, and didn't try to make boost in third gear. So for my purposes that was fantastic (albeit far from ideal, obviously).
Anyway, when I went to the drag strip with it I played around with a couple different options to try and get the shifts done a little quicker and waste less of the quarter mile distance coasting waiting for shifts to happen. I guess it was too much abuse finally, because now 1st is the only gear that will really hold any boost at all.
The timing isn't too bad, because the 540i6 with turbo is starting to come around pretty well, so I'll probably run that at the Halloween Bash put on by MiDrift. Even at 3psi it runs surprisingly good, and the M5 diff with Redline "NS" style diff lube seems pretty nice. I think it will be fun, barring that I break it before then or something...
So what will happen to the auto box?

Getting yanked out when I have a chance. I'm definitely not going to try to run a 4L30e any further.
3 pedal time?!

-_- Even I'm gonna do a manual swap in a car soon lol. E46s are tons easier tho.

I'm soooo loving having an automatic car. I think I should have given them a shot a lot sooner than I did. Why are E46s easier to swap?
quick disconnects everywhere and sooo much more space under the car. Pedal setup is a little bit easier IMO but someone might argue otherwise.

Interesting!
Another thing I found interesting in terms of E36 vs. E46 as drift toys, is the fact that Chelsea Denofa seems to be collecting E36s for his toy collection. Clearly he's completely familiar with E46s, and yet he doesn't seem to mess with them other than the one he left almost completely stock. I wonder why? Seems like there is probably a reason.
Because e36's cost about $5, and e46's are still worth something to normal people
Hmmm, I guess. Around here it seems like they are pretty similar in price.
E36s have good power to weight ratio and are super cheap. The 323/325 E46s can barely get out of their own way. A 328 is meh and even the 330 is below the E36 M3 in power to weight ratio from the factory. I won't even go to the E46 M3. If you want something that will slide for cheap cheap, it's an E36. Plus E36 M3s don't need the subframe reinforcements.

This thread is fun AF! Looking forward to updates.
Haha, thanks! Glad you enjoyed the nonsense!!
I am behind on an update for sure. This sucker has been taking up a lot of my time since I actually got it running well (MS3X was necessary -- WinOLS and DMEs make me hate life):
Actually I JUST NOW came in the house from dialing in the gasoline tune on it for a prospective buyer who doesn't have E85 available nearby. So far only half the boost I had been running through it on E85, but it still runs real nice on 8psi from the 78mm billet wheel turbo.
So anyway, here's an installment of the updates I'm behind on:
Manual Brakes Setup.jpg
I was out this winter playing World Rally Sweden in my FWD dogvan with the ABS fuse pulled, drifting the crap out of it via left foot braking, when I realized just how much I dislike power brakes. So hopefully this setup will work out a lot better for me for actual semi-real drifting this year. To say I'm excited about it is an understatement. Lol
