    Air Quality Sensor

    https://www.ecstuning.com/BMW-E36-M3-S52_3.2L/ES176686/

I've had an e36 for over 11 years and didn't know about this sensor.

The description states that it will automatically activate recirculation mode if the outside air quality is poor. I've never seen this happen. Maybe Florida just isn't smoggy enough?

Had anyone else seen this thing go into effect?

The E36 IHKA does not have this function. It was available on later E38s and E39s.

Nope, it was available everywhere but the US in the E36, we got it with the E46.

Great. Now I want this. I wonder how much would need to be swapped to make it work.

The sensor of course, a 3 wire wiring loom, that you need to run from the kidneys to the back of the unit, and a non-US climate control unit, as your won't have the extra switch on the pcb, nor the extra connector on the back for the sniffer.

It's actually quite a nifty feature and not as gimmickery as it sounds. When AUC is on, you can here the fresh air flaps closing and opening.

It was quite an expensive additional option on the already expensive climate control option.

Both my (German market) E36's have it and I use it all the time when the A/C is not running.
Here you can see the extra symbol on the recirc button. Excuse the bad pic.

It has nothing to do with the airduct. AUC I have on both my Eu 328i and my EU M3.

The location is not easy to see, not even with your eyes. So its exact location is hard to pinpoint. Well it's located at the top of the kidney hight, in a cavity between the left headlight and that metal framepiece surrounding the kidneys. I never had a front off so that I could actually see it.

That cavity is between the headlight and ducting. I’m pretty sure. It’s in the exact same position.

I’ll see what I can do. Looking at your pic, it should be mounted higher.

The sensor is just about visible when you stare into that hole next to the hoodlocks. The one where the release hooks sits in.

I always wondered what that was on my old E38, but I had never actually RTFM to even know about AUC feature

I will when I get to my M3. It’s not parked in front of my house.
