So, I think it was actually 2001 MY that started using BMW 5W-30 as recommended oil due to the revised piston rings. That said, the engine was still developed to use 10w-60, so that's what I plan to continue running in my S62. Oil analysis came back excellent, so I have no reason to change.

As far as the oil battles go - for the S62, I would just stick with the 10W60 oil - synthetic at that. However, for those in colder climates, 10W40 is fine because you want that oil flowing as quickly as possible from start up. It is correct that BMW went with the 5W30 oil after the 2001 MY revision of the S62 engine. However, later on, there are reports of them reverting back to 10W60 for ALL S62 engines.
For Max, the 0W40 should be fine through winter since the recommended one was 10W30. Personally, I recommend NEVER ignoring the warm up lights on the RPM gauge. I personally let my car sit for 5 minutes before driving off and will ABSOLUTELY NOT rev it past the warm up lights. On cold starts, I basically let the SAP pump run a full cycle before I drive off. That assures me the engine is ready to drive off and oil is flowing.
I can't really comment much on cold weather startups because it's never really below 45ºF on the absolute coldest winter nights here, but when I had an M5 I would just drive it gently until the warmup lights were done. BMW has never recommended idling the car before driving it, they just say to drive it gently while it warms up. So as long as you're not redlining your M5 as soon as you start it up you'll be fine. It's not rocket science.

Not saying its rocket science Danny - just saying what I do with my car/s. It works for me, but each to his own.
OIL THREAD!!!!
Validity to most of comments above, usin different oil for winter ain't gonna be a humanitarian crisis or anything. The only guidelines I'd use would be, still use a premium quality lighter weight synthetic, don't suddenly decide to drive to Mexico and track the car for 3 days with the light oil in it, and yeah, let the thing warm up for a few seconds in the crap weather regardless. I wouldn't use a cheap oil in any M motor regardless of weight, thats prob the biggest thing. I'm still on the TWS train for my S54 even though philosophically I'm in the "TWS isn't magic and there's no gypsy voodoo curse going to befall you if you stop using it, as long as what you replace it with is similarly premium quality" camp.
FWIW TWS has gotten a fair bit easier to find and cheaper now that BMW dumped Castrol as the official brand. You can find it now at Autozone etc. etc. under the Euro "Edge" brand now (where the parts jockeys have no idea it used to be this special hard to find $$$$$ thing)(.

Great looking car man, looks pretty damn clean for the miles - congratulations! Love the color combo too, not flashy under "the radar". Agreed with other posters on keeping it stock.

Max - I am very upset at how you damaged my car's side skirt man. Please get it fixed quickly so I can pick it up in time for Thanksgiving..... jus sayin man :-)
Great car man! Congrats. Another M5 in the ranks here. Looks in pretty good shape too.
Since you suspect some under surface rust already, I'd get under the car and in all the common places and get an assessment of what is there now. I'd check under jack pads, gas filler area, under lip of trunk, inside trunk at rear lights, bottom of doors, inside fender lips, etc. You may be able to get some protection stuff on the metal now to prevent spread.
Great car and good luck with it.

5w50 is my protip. It fills all the expensive oil checklists and has better cold start capabilities. Surely it will win the oil war.
The engineers can go drink some BMW Blue.
