    I would start by pulling the belt and making sure the idle pulleys are good. From what I understand when the guides go its unmistakable.

    This may be redundant as I did not have time to read all the remarks. When your timing chain guides are gone or close to it, usually you will get the P0011 code along with a cold morning start that provides for a momentary scary chain rattling sound that is unmistakable.
