    New back tire question?

In the market for a new set of back tires. Have staggered m-Pars w/Dunlup DZ102 Direnzza 255/45 R18 in the back and 235/50 R18 in the front.

I have noticed that in the front tires, the tire sidewall sticks out further out of the lips of the rim. On the rear tires the side wall of the tire are flush with the lips of the rim. In an effort to avoid curb rash on the rear rims, I am thinking of getting wider tires in the back.

Dunlup make a 275/35 r18 tires which are wider, but according to my calculation, the wider tire is smaller in height. H=275x0.35=96.25mm versus the current tires that have H=255x0.45=114.75mm. Does the diff in height make a big difference?

My question is whether to go w/the 255s or the 275s or some other option?

I went with 285/40/18 on my m-pars and am very happy with the look. The 255s had that stretched look and now the front and back both look kinda squared up.

I have 285 40 as well. Goodyear Eagles on tire rack are pretty cheap and im happy with them so far... These continentals are on special!

Is this the Goodyear Eagle that you have?
    http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes

The Continental being on sale and about same price as above Goodyear, which will be the better choice?
    http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires....omCompare1=yes

What size of tire do you have in the front?

Yes those are the goodyears I have. I'd probably go with the continentals at that price. I have 235 50 18 in front but 245 45 18 will be nice up there as well...

285 40 are expensive and hard to find I found that 175 40 18 for the rear and 245 45 18 for the front are identical height so they look perfect and a wider range of manufacturers available

Looking at the photos on the website, it looks that this tire is not symmetrical (Thread pattern is different on each side of the tire). My guess that there should be different tire for the left and another for the right side (Yes?)

The website does not specify how to order a left side or a right side tire! Any thoughts...

Just order 2 of them. I wish these priced at $153 per tire were around when I bought mine. I'd much prefer the conti's...

Definitely go for the 275/40 or 285/40 if that is available in the Direzzas.

    Also..
I just put a set of Conti DWS06 on all 4. 275-40 on the rear m-pars. 245-45 up front. There is decent curb rash protection. They feel great. They are grippier than I expected them to be. And just soft enough in the sidewall to be comfortable, but not sloppy. I was worried about that, but they are not too soft. The 06 variant is decent.

285/40 would be the same radius as 255/45. Just as 275/40 is the same as radius as 245/45. I thought the 255/45 was too small for the rear of a 7. I wish there was 275/45 245/50s available. I dig the beefier tire now that I tried it on the e39 for the sake of pothole protection/comfort. I went up a series 265/40 instead of 265/35 in the rear and 235/45 vs 235/40 Michi PSS on e39 mpars. no fitment issues.

I am getting bad redirect from above URL - redirecting to "redirect dot viglink dot com ..."

I have also noticed some bad redirects last couple of days when I first open the browser to e38 forum home page. Any one else had some issue with this forum?

Yes I have noticed that as well. Here is a new link that should
work fine unless bimmerforums is getting money to redirect to some crappy shopping website.

Thanks for posting those. Looks good!

I got a phone call and an email from Tirerack when I ordered the 285's for my car. They were very concerned because that's not a standard E38 size. Reality is 285's are only slightly wider than 255's. I was going to order some 15mm spacers too but need to make sure the 285's won't rub with them.

I have the 285s in the back. Thinking of getting matching set of the Continentals for the front. Currently have Dunlop 235/50 R18

Any one has or recommend going up one size in the front (245/45ZR18)?

    235/50ZR18 for $116.75
    https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...ECDW&tab=Sizes

    245/45ZR18 for $125.70
    https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...DWXL&tab=Sizes

Any on using the 245/45ZR18 in the front on M Pars

Have a flat today rear driver. Tire worn to the treads not holding pressure. I never noticed the wear until today. The wear is at the inside corner of the tire. Both rear tires have the same amount of wear. The tires are the Conti 285/40/18 Extreme Contact. They are 2.5 years old w/about 30k all city miles. Is this a normal life of these tire or might I have an alignment issue?

Bought these tires in 2015 at $136 each. Same tire now is $269 at tirerack.com (https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...rtnum=84YR8ECS).

Shall I go w/the same tire? Smaller 275/40/18 are a bit cheaper (not much)? Or some other brand?

    Any suggestions for the replacements?

I've got those in 275/40 in the rear (with 255/45 up front) on my car currently, but only about 1400 miles on them so far. The 275/40 is a perfect fit on the 9.5" wide rear wheels (as is the 255/45 on the 9" wide E39 rears I'm running up front). 30k isn't a bad life for that kind of tire, but being worn just on the inside corner indicates less than ideal alignment for your driving style, etc. I'd try running a little less negative camber in the rear (spec is -1.5*, maybe try -1.3*) and a bit less rear toe in as well. That should help reduce the inner edge wear a bit and give you a little more life out of the next set.

I'd say the low side of normal for sticky contis and the factory e38 alignment. Its a pretty aggressive factory camber.

Agree, although I would have the alignment checked. My guess is the toe is out, which will cause way more inner wear than camber would. How old are your control arms back there? Check the ball joint boots for health and the bushings for tears.

The 540 had Conti DWS on it that it roasted the insides. Those tires were too soft when we moved to FL heat and the alignment was off in the back by a good amount.

I have the Conti's on my E38 track wheels and now my E60 M5. There are great tires, when you lean on them they talk back and have never suddenly let go. 30k for this king of tire is pretty darn good. If you compare the same type of tire from another there will be no mileage warranty. I had Mich. AS/3 on my M5 when I bought it and the conti's are better.

Yeah they are a great sticky tire. I liked them when I had them. Way better than the DWS.

I run the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 tires now. I really like those for half the price.
