Slowly getting all of the handles and light and various trim off the car. Ordered a bunch of new seals and gaskets but stop short of the finisher that doubles our car's value. In the end i might bite the bullet and pop for these but the cheapest I have found so far is $246 per side. It seams a shame to have to spend so much just to fix the rubber weather stripping on the back end of this. It is held in by double sided tape so that brings me to a few questions:
1.Has anyone used the e36 piece as it is sold separately and the window is a bit larger so you should have plenty?
2. Has anyone just removed the piece and switched sides? The rotted part now would be buried up under the finisher and you have a fresh end that has been out of the sun forever.
3. Since this rubber piece is extruded it is a safe bet that there is a company that makes this for BMW. It should not cost the same as a set of tires to replace to pieces of trim.
I will be removing the old rubber and then decide what path I am going to take on this one. Thanks for the thoughts.

I share your frustration. I know an extrusion die is pretty cheap, so if someone who knows a bit about materials could spec material/durometer I expect that it'd be easy to get some interest in tooling it up and buying a couple thousand feet. I'd be game. If you're going to pull the parts off, I'd be nice to see a cross section shot with approximate dimensions.
Not aware of any off-the-shelf solution that I trust. I saw a writeup from a guy who bought some weatherstripping or tubing from a home improvement store to do the job, but not sure how it worked out.

Yes, will do. I read a thread on another forum about using the e36 piece as it is sold as a separate piece. Current e46 piece is just held in by two sided tape so there should be no reason why you could not tape it on after you screw the metal part back on the car. Couple weeks away from getting to this but I think the rubber strip's only function is to prevent the window from banging on the body of the car. Will start pulling the old rubber off and see what I come up with.

May be work buying some of the weather stripping just to have the option.

Yes I have that DIY. I ordered a set of the e36 seals. If they don't work I will sell them to the e36 crowd. Some vendors have the seals for less than $20 could live with that as the seal is a bit wider at the end. Took 10 minutes to pull the old rubber off.
Have the e36 seals. They will not work as the extrusion is a bit off and the ends are not as wide.
