sup, since tech is dead and i miss my artificial online experience with complete strangers i figured i would share what has been going on in the world of the e30.
Goal was to build a car that would compete well in the regional autocross and still be able to handle traveling 100's of miles as well as handle the track days that did not exist this year.
basic run down.
New wheels / tires / brakes / and suspension. and i mean everything. from the axle back and the mounting points down is brand new.
Fall of 2014 i ran the e30 in the local autox and this was the result.

A little promo for the race season???
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=25P1...ature=youtu.be
- - - Updated - - -
The goal for the year was to finish around 20 to 30th at each event. As i got the car dialed in i became quicker and quicker each race.
This weekend i scored 4th place. there is a tight race for the championship points about 6 cars are chasing for 4th place.
Lessons learned, the rear toe and camber adjustments have been a pia, ive had 4-5 alignments and its has came loose each time. The last alignment i had done i had them tac weld the bolt, i then drove it home and red locktite the 4 nuts. after 2 events it appears to be tight and not moving.
Hopefully this winter i will be able to respray the front end and repair some rust. as well as add the turbo back on.

Heres where crap went south. After driving the car around town i noticed when i came back to the shop the car would not turn off. ie engine was still running with the key removed. This occured 1 week before the first race . So i demolished the interior to try and find this issue.

So i decided to work on the drive-ability issues with mega-squirt. When i have overrun on it drives like garbage in first gear and bucks when i am between idle and 1800 rpms. slight modification to the overrun part and it seems to behave much better. decided to start working on the tip in lean issue or accel enrichment and now the car runs leaner then before. I upped my ego control from 10% to about 15% for the time being. Doing all this on the phone has its limitations and hope to get my laptop back today from IT.
Been also working on a custom badge i printed in college and have yet to finish. currently sanding it at 1500 grit, i will need to get some photos of that up soon.
Wish i would have left the tune alone for the last race. o well. Keep Driving!

The season ended last weekend. Finished in 4th place overall. Will receive 3 free event entrances for next year as well as a trophy and a 2002 wall print.
BMW2002Poster.jpg
I did poorly on the last event mentally. However on my long 2 hour drive home i completed a list of items i need to take care of for next year.
Alternator has been slowly dying over the year and has already been sent back to get rebuilt.
As soon as it comes back ill begin on the random miss fires and re-tuning the car. I will need to get the turbo installed sometime this winter and begin working out the quirks with that.

New napa unit has been better but i still received a miss / voltake spikes. Tried a remand Bosch unit and the voltage drops are better however i still get a miss and voltage drops/spikes.
Digging further i realize i am using 550cc Low impedance injectors. well my megasqurit is not set up for them. I should be able to modify the fly back circuit to stop the large voltage fluctuations.
Next vehicle on the list is to get the trailer in tip top shape. and prep the e34 for a year of racing.

How to turbo your car:
Step one. Install ecu and learn to tune and or have it tuned.
Step two. Install injectors and retune.
Step three. Install turbo parts and bits. get it running with out leaks. DO NOT DRIVE IT. Idling should be ok
Step four. Retune car
Step five enjoy
Wow Ryan, you've been busy! Congrats on the 4th place!

haha yes i have been a little busy. trying to get this car dialed in for next year especially before winter hits and i dont want to work out side.
Currently trying to get the ecu finshed for once in its life time. If i end up sending it to keith, ill probably pull the injectors at the same time and have them cleaned and flow tested. While they are out ill machine proper spacers to seal for boost. O boost you are so damn close.
I want to compete in the SCCA as an SM class. So i need to get all of this done and done correctly so i can try to compete against the 400hp evo's on 275 slicks.

So 1 nagging issue i have had since i got the head welded a few years ago is smoke under high rpm high vacuum.
Scenario - accelerating shift to 2nd, accelerating, shift to 3rd, accelerating stop accelerating around 6,000 rpms and lift off the throttle to begin breaking or just to maintain speed. 1-2 seconds after lifting off the throttle i get a large plume of smoke. i can stop any smoke screen by instantly shifting into a higher gear.
i am assuming the valve guides and seals need to be replaced. Opinions? btw i am doing a leak down test on sunday.

That sounds a lot like valve guide seals.

Seals usually go first, guides are obviously possible but less commonly the cause. Hard to say for certain from here, but I'd think you'd want to do both while you're there.

What are you going to do to the e34 powerwise? Obviously that baby 8 won't hang with the evos.
If your e30 runs bad, switch to Megasquirt first. Then try new spark plugs, cap and rotor, wires, oxygen sensor, crank shaft position sensor, coolant temp sensor, air flow meter, idle control valve, throttle position sensor, digital motor electronics unit, harmonic balancer, fuel injectors, engine harness...

Nice looking na Im doing a similar build and so far have removed weight. Im planning on some nice track coilovers and turbo kit both from fm. As far as wheels go, I suggest Bassett racing, reasonably priced and lightweight Set of 4 will run you under 300
Leak down test results.

Its still not very clear what the issue is. Is it worth putting new seals in just for this one issue? Again the issue is under high rpm, high decel. aka lifting off the throttle around 5-7k rpms i get smoke from the exhaust.
I found my stash of mega-squirt parts and found the 22 cent capacitor, i ordered one for about 10 bucks :/ to hopefully fix my voltage spikes. I also found some old blue injectors may be worth a shot to swap back to those and see what else breaks.

I don't think it's worth it, assuming that's all it is.

Thats kinda my thought. Im going to get a new coolant tank and cap too as i came to realize my level always seems to drop down some. leaking burning idk. If my disappearing coolant is stopped by that, and i confirm it is truly oil from the valve seals i think its something ill live with. Its been like this for a while. kinda concerned its a cracked head.

Well installed the capacitor and 99.99% of my ecu noise is gone! Progress for sure. going to order a new coolant tank and cap and crap and see if that helps my missing coolant which is starting to get me worried.
one item down one item added.

race cars are battles. went to install the new IAT, wrong connector and i stripped the bung on my intake. weld penetrated to far and into the plug.
Next week i hopefully will knock out a few more items on the e30 and get the e34 running.

wow, this is a heck of a thread. once I started, I was stuck till the end.
I still love the idea of megasquirt on an e30. but after my ms incident back in 06 or 08 or whenever I did my 89, I have been scared of it. I wish I was more of a computer guy so I understood that stuff.
No e30s again.
dont worry i still dont understand much of it. been relearning since i first built this unit in 09
