I have a US e36 M3.
From reviews and videos it sounds like the SS RACE muffler is a step above Stock but now I see there's a performance SS and I don't know what to go with. Perhaps better build quality in the Performace vs Race muffler? The reason for the $400 pricing
Also, how to decide between the SS RACE muffler with Axel back connecting pipes ($780) while the Muffler alone is $900?

Anything less than the loudest thing you can install is BS. So I went with the B+B Tri-flo. I'm not disappointed. If you don't wanna be subtle, then don't be. The SS may be made well, but by all accounts is not a whole lot louder than stock. And it costs $$$$.

The Supersprint Sport exhaust is a step above stock.
Supersprint Race is loud as s**t.
What midpipe are you running? If you don't have a midpipe with a LOT of sound deadening (ie stock, or something with massive resonators) it's going to be too loud for daily-driving, in my opinion. Lots of volume, lots of drone.
I'll be running stock midpipe.
You really think the RACE is that much louder than the Sport muffler? I thought the $400 price bump was because the build quality on the sport (performance) muffler was better. Just from my observation on videos and the forums, most people have suggested the Race muffler, probably because it's more affordable?

Yes.
I've had both on my car. I had the Sport on the car for three or four years. It sounds basically stock with a little more volume. I went from that to the SS Race, and it's a completely different animal. The race is about half the size of the sport and has very little sound deadening material in it. It's basically a straight pipe with a little bit of rockwool packed around it. It sounds twice as loud as the sport.
You might be ok with the stock midpipe, but if you change that out you'd better get something with a mile-long resonator in it.
^ Thanks for this knowledge. I could always sell the RACE if its too much for me after a month or two. I wonder if the Stromung is inbetween. There's also Eisenmann and Borla and UUC to look at. crap, i thought i narrowed it down haha.
anyone in the bay area with thee above mentioned exhaust care to show me what they have, please do.

Stromung is beautiful. I wish they had made one to fit the euro mid-pipe. I ended up with Super Sprint post headers on my S50B32.

supersprint, AA, stromung, remus, borla, eisenmann, rogue, corsa, triflo, UUC, ss race? Sorta in that order of loudness. Have not heard eisenmann, AA, and ss race in person though. There are others too that I've left out.
I'm very happy with my Borla, for what it's worth. I did a bunch of research and had it between that and the Stromung. Their sounds are somewhat similar, with the Stromung perhaps a bit more aggressive. The fitment on the Borla is a little easier if you run very wide tires in back, since the muffler sits fully aft of the rear wheels (the Stromung sits partially next to the rear wheels). All the aftermarket catbacks will be much lighter than stock but the Borla was among the lightest if I recall, 24 pounds lighter than stock. I also had an easier time finding the Borla so that did it for me.
The Borla has a great deep tone, and isn't obnoxiously loud (though certainly louder than stock). My car is geared lower so I rev pretty high in 5th on the freeway, and it's still fine. At idle you get a lot more of the low-end rumble, and at WOT and high revs it screams as you'd expect.

All solid info, fellas! thanks

Good info so far. I'm glad to know the SS race is ridiculously loud. Definitely not for me I guess.
I'm in the same boat as OP. I already removed an exhaust I liked the sound of due to the volume being a bit unreasonable. Don't want to do it again.
I'm thinking SS sport, stromung, or eisensammasnnansnnsnanannnnnniinnnnnnnnn sport. Seems like for the price though stromung can't be beat.
Stromung is very deep sounding and many regard it as the exhaust the M should have come stock with and it is beautifully designed and constructed.

I have Stromung with resonators instead of cats and love it. But really, you need to go for cars with each and listen.

Eisenmann race is by far the best, with euro mid X pipe... too bad just the muffler section is over $1,200 alone

I'd call Stromung subtle to subtle +. It's not abnoxiously loud, and not raspy at all. It's deep and bassy, with a sweet growl under full throttle. Exactly what I was looking for. It sounds like what you're looking for as well. It also weighs probably half of stock, and looks much better too (no big udder hanging down below the rear bumper).

I think Stromung is the best for that deeper sound with a nice tone to it. Then if you want louder with raspyness but no drone, Corsa, right up there with the Eisenmann race. If I wanted to get rid of my corsa, I'd probably go with Stromung. Or modify the stock exhaust.

Stromung hands down, extremely happy with mine, its not too loud but has just enough grunt to be pleasant and not obnoxious.
Really like my stromung a lot for my street legal track rat M3. Very subtle on the street but howls nicely on the track. Very nice quality. Sounds like an M3 should.
