This guy would know, and I can second that from CT winter experience. I have house brand 185/70?/15s for my 318 on a set of steel rims for the winter, no issues. Looking to replace them now after six years. They still have plenty of tread but they are down into the harder base compound and don't bite quite as well anymore.

I run a 15x6.5 steel wheel with Hankook I*Cept RS2 195/65/15 for my winter set up and it does great on my No-ASC, no-lsd 320.
