Are you using the 2 piece piston ring set? I heard that there was some kind of hybrid M52/M54 Frankenstein 3 piece ring set that wears a lot less more than the factory 2 piece set.

Update again: Worked on the engine today. Put the rear main seal housing in and installed the oil pan all with new gaskets. Also helped my Dad put his completed M54b30 into the E39. Wheew!

Awesome! Thanks for all the pics!

What did you use to "hone" the cylinders?

Update: Was ready to install the head and was cleaning the surfaces when I noticed a CRACK from a valve seat running to a coolant jacket. Was more than a bit upset. I looked over the head quick when I received it from the machine shop, however apparently not close enough. I had the surface covered with tape to do the valves and only removed the tape in prep to install. Called around for quotes on repairs and they were in the $500-$700 range.... What are you gonna do? Sourced a loaded head from a local guy on the cheaper side and am redoing all of the cylinder head work. Had donor head pressure checked and cut and will be doing valves sometime soon. Stay tuned!

Donor head! has Aprox. 95k miles on it. Car was wreaked.

    Let's start over!!

Awe man bummer. I'll be staying tuned for the results. Hopefully you will not go back to the same place for head work

Can't blame the machine shop, I just asked for a resurface not any "extra" inspection. I mean, yes they probably SHOULD have seen it as who DOESN'T inspect the surface you just cut.... This has been a sort of bad luck build between the bent rod, cracked valve retainer and now the head being cracked. No gains without pains I suppose.

Go back and look at pics posted on first page- can you see the crack now? Looks like number 5 exhaust??

Good thing you caught it before install. Sucks either way.

Damn, Dan the Man, that sucks. I'd be a little ticked the shop didn't even mention it...but agreed that just sourcing a new M50 head is cheaper than fixing those cracks.

It was the third cylinder from front of the engine.

Im sure the guy barely looked at it. More disappointed in myself for not looking at it hard enough when I received it. Water under the bridge I guess. I am working on the "new" cylinder head as we speak.

Update: Got the new head polished, valves lapped and installed. Put on a new hg and installed the head. It's starting to look like something now.

Got a chance to do some work on the build. Cleaned lifters/trays/cams from head #2 and installed them. Still needs timed and install sprockets/chain/ tensioners

So it's been awhile..... I have bought and completely rebuilt 2 cars and just recently bought a Ford 6.9 diesel Flatbed.... Needless to say this thing has been neglected, but no more!!! Here is the progress so far.

Got the m50b30 close enough where the other engine had to come out.

Trans, exhaust and drive shaft to. Switching to a zf320. More on that later....

    Switching over the necessary components

    Shop dog Jr.

    I have thing for tranniez

SO. Everyone on the internet says the zf310 and zf320 are identical in all things that matter. NOT. First off, my 310 had a forward transmission mount in the shape of a U. The 320 does not. Seems it doesnt matter but tripped me up for a little. Next, the Shift selector joint on the rear of the transmission are different lengths. Not by much but enough to throw of your shifter. 4th gear was slamming the center console. Changed the 320 joint for the 310 joint and worked perfect. I was pulling my hair out trying to find the problem and it was jus tthe little joint!

    Got the engine installed to

zf320 with new clutch, t.o.b., guibo and slave.

Changed CSB and put d shaft back in.

    90% complete!!

    Till next time!

It's cool that this thread popped up recently, as I've been thinking about an M50B30 build... what kind of gains can be expected from it? An S50 makes about 240hp, so with a proper tune would it be around that ballpark?

Hard to say. I am using a miller war chip for tuning so that will help clean it up, but it's basically a non vanos s50 so number wise it's hard to pin down.

I doubt it as a lot of the power comes from the head, or really cams in this particular case - but it should be a torquey sumbish compared to a B25.

So an M50B30 stroker with S52 cams should be more potent than just an M50B30 stroker, right? I'm just brainstorming ideas for my own build.

Definitely (or S50 cams); it's been awhile so my memory is fuzzy, but I know there are other advantages in the S50/2 heads like increased flow as well. Head work is everything!
