Changed both crank position sensors today an I am happy to to say she is running magnificently !

I would alos alos like to say that changing the cps units really isn't that difficult. I had these wrapped up in two hours. I could see this taking a novice some time but an experienced guy will have no trouble here.

I would also also point out that these things were looking old. Brittle hard wiring and covers with years of dirt. I say this should be a maintenance item at this point on these cars.

Replaced with Facet brand which was quite inexpensive and seems to work fine. For the first time I have no check engine light. Now granted I have only owned this car for a couple of weeks so still pulling her together.

Thanks shogun firmall all your help in identifying the problem. Couldn't have done it without you.

Just for info: Here is a info from the manual for the M1.7 Motronic for the S70B56 engine for catalytic converter protection function (ignition circuit monitoring)
The ignition circuit is monitored by the cylinder detection sender pin 16 on ignition line 6 or 12. If it detects no ignition signal on ignition line 6 or 12 , the fuel supply to the relevant cylinder bank is cut out by shortening the injection signal. The sender monitors the entire primary side of the ignition and cylinder 6 or 12 on the secondary side.

An an added note. My issue was the crank position sensor which causes the no spark condition. This in turn leads to what shogun has stated above. Basically when no spark is detected that bank shuts down, fuel is cut and that bank is just along for the ride. Moral an of the story check your cps sensors if you have no spark.

updated by Bentley Publishers especially for the M60 engine, before there was 1200 Ohm mentioned by mistake, 540 ± 10% Ω is for ALL E32 engines the same, M30, M60 and M70
Ignition Coil Resistance (M60 engine) Terminals Resistance
    Coil primary 1 (–) and 15 (+) 0.8 Ω (approx.)
Using digital multimeter, check resistance between terminals 1 and 2 in crankshaft position/rpm sensor connector.

    Crankshaft Position/rpm Sensor Specifications • Coil resistance (approx.) @ 20°C . . . . . . 540 ± 10% Ω, • Air gap (sensor distance from toothed wheel) . . . . . . . 1.0 ± 0.3 mm (0.04 ± 0.01 in.)
