I need a replacement transmission - that part is confirmed. I found a low milage 4L30E from a 99 Z3 to swap into my 99 528iT. I'm getting the torque converter along with the transmission. Which TC should I use? Are there any differences or advantages to using the Z3 TC in place of the E39? Anything else that I should be aware of when swapping these?
Thanks a lot.
In case this comes up for anyone else, here's what you need. Or what I needed.
The only differences that I could find were the output flange and the selector rod; part #1 here: (https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=24_0807)
I kept my e39 torque converter, though it looked identical to the z3 model. The output flange required a 1 1/4 SAE deep socket which I had to run to Harbor Freight for. Other than that it was pretty painless as far as transmission swaps on your garage floor go.
I can't help you much other than to say that mine is original on my 528 and with 140k miles still shifts like a butter.
I bought the car in 2003 with 39k miles and I did 3 oil changes since about every 35k miles. I've used Dexron III which is right oil for this tranny.
Sure, ZF 5 speed is more sophisticated and fuel efficient but at that mileage many had go be rebuild.
Another interesting fact and IIRC, This same French made GM tranny is used in some other makes including Isuzu Rodeo.
