I didn't finish getting everything mocked up last night. I now understand why you guys pull the motor . RR mount is installed. After bench pressing the turbo for over an hour i was still unsuccessful getting it mounted to the spa in the car. I separated the hot side housing and life got much easier (thank you Raji and Zack for helping with the noob questions). Hot side is mounted with very little clearance for a downpipe. I may have to get happy with a grinder on the transmission belhousing to gain a few valuable mm's of clearance, but i think there's enough room to make something work. Just ordered a few v band flanges and clamps for exhaust / downpipe, and a few AN fittings for plumbing. I should hopefully finish up the turbo fitment tonight, Then i can start putting things back together.

Hell yeah!!!
I'm still dragging my heals on buying a Wastegate. Can anyone verify If the Snyapse 40mm with clear the firewall/frame rail without resorting to a big hammer? I was looking last night and once again, clearance is tight, maybe 3-4 inches before i hit the wall. If not does anyone have a Snyapse 40mm they could take a tape measure to and provide the dimensions? What WG's will fit the Spa without any modifications?

Dont bolt the wg directly to the manifold. Run a pipe off the manifold wg port and mount the wg below the car where you can fit whatever the hell you want.
Dammit. That doesn't help me narrow down Wastegate options... Back to looking at the more expensive 50mm Synapse, since i have to make one fit anyway

Buy a tial wastegate
Also, if that were mine, id put a 2.8 block in there, you wouldnt notice the difference.
Either that, bore and built your block.

I ran into some clearance issues with the cold side of the turbo housing. No matter what i do, the 90 degree elbow hits either the block, the underside of the manifold, or the passenger frame rail, depending how im trying to clock it. I can't get the turbo mounted flat on the exhaust flange of the manifold. I dropped the housing off Saturday at a friend's shop for a little modification. He Shortened up the elbow about an inch, which should give me plenty of room. got a message last night that it's all set, picking it up tomorrow after work. I also get to drool over the E30 M3 S62 swap he's in the middle of . I'm hoping to get final fitment wrapped up this weekend. Not much progress this week. Got a bunch of misc. fittings, gaskets and flanges in the mail yesterday.

So you are putting the motor back together with the piston that has the collapsed skirt? That is going to bite you in the ass.
The piston skirt isn't collapsed. There's a small part of the valve relief cut in the piston that's mysteriously missing. (see pic)
By the amount of carbon buildup on the piston I suspect it's been that way for a long time (prior to my ownership). No it's not the best decision, but It is what it is. This engine isn't in the best of shape so it's not getting rebuilt, It's probably getting blown up. Building a short block over the winter, and i need my garage space back for other projects.

I was referring to the video you posted of the piston rocking back and forth .020", thats a collapsed skirt. The top of the piston should not be able to touch the cylinder wall. Its most likely been that way since it ate the valve or whatever object it was that beat everything in there to death. Just wanted to be sure you knew whats going on in there, carry on.
I thought it had crazy leak down? Boost isnt going to help that issue lol

I hear you, but on further inspection i fould that all of the pistons have similar movement in that aspect. I doubt that all 6 pistons have collapsed skirts. I asked several people and get everything from "it looks normal" to "it looks bad". IMO isn't not good. I originally thought that it may have ate a valve, but there are ZERO marks on the top of the piston where it would have contacted a valve. The missing part of the piston valve relief is a mystery at this point, since i cant find a smoking gun as to how it ended up this way.
I do appreciate the warning, I know i'm playing with a time bomb.

I've been questioning the accuracy of the compression / leak down test. I ran a comp/leak down test recently on another vehicle with the same tools and was getting very erratic readings. i know that cyl#1 is going to be low due to the condition of it, but it would have to have a hole in the engine to produce the results i got.
I knew i'd get a little flack about putting this pos back together in its current condition. I'm not real happy about it, but this is whats happening. It's an experiment at this point. How long can a tired and worn S50 survive under boost?

I cant really sit here and tell you to not put in a hurt/questionable motor because ive done it many times, but i can tell you that its almost always bitten me in the butt.
2.8's are cheap man. Free if you do it right.

I know there's a very good chance that is will come back and bite my backside, im actually expecting it. The question is will it hold up long enough for me to get a suitable replacement block ready to install. 2.8's are tempting enough that i won't rule it out at this point, and i could almost definitely have a 2.8 fortified and ready to go quicker and cheaper than an S50/S52.

Good luck mboor.
Eat, drink, and be merry - for tomorrow we drive.
In to watch and learn as well.

I'm defusing the time bomb. An S52 short block with a recently refreshed bottom end popped up for sale about a hour and a half away from me. The price is right, so im going to pick it up tomorrow if everything checks out. Also picked up a Rally Road 340 fuel pump kit to properly feed the E85. with any luck, i will not be providing any carnage pics for you guys in the near future. Sorry for the dissapoints.

The S52 short block looked good. The guy works at a bmw dealer and was refreshed with oem rings bearings and bolts. Its sitting on an engine stand in my garage right now, time to get to work. I feel much better about this engine.

I dont plan on pushing this bottom end much past 500. But at least i can do that with peace of mind now. I haven't abandoned the plan for a built motor, just bought myself some time. Im starting to get excited. I want to be boosting for my xmas present.
