I installed ISTA-D about 2 years ago hoping it would replace all my other diag software but it's just not there yet. Specifically I would like to replace DIS/GT1 with it, but I've never been able to do the VANOS test. Yesterday I got pretty close, but it seems to have ended short of a few more clicks. Take a look:
I get into dms and this is all I get. I'm supposed to have a few options including expert menu/mode where the VANOS test lives. But nothing, just up and down, nothing more.
So does anyone know what's going on? Also, why do some setups have an "Activities" tab and others, like mine, have "Vehicle Management"? Is this a software thing or am I missing something..? I am currently running 4.01.21 as of yesterday.
I've noticed my KL 15 and KL 30 are blank. I'm guessing these are terminals 15 and 30, and in people's setups, they show the voltage. Mine don't. I'm thinking about deleting everything and restarting with a fresh install, but if it's something simple then I'd rather avoid doing all that.
I have like 2 different versions of INPA and EDIABAS 6.4.7 and 7.3.0, I switch folder names depending on which program I use.
Thanks in advance!

I have never been able to get voltage reading for both KL15 and KL30...of course, my vehicle is a 95M3 so what can I say. I will say, based on your cars and you’re wanting to stop using DIS/GT1, is to get the ICOM hardware.
I think ICOM is only for programming the newer BMWs.

ICOM is for everything from E30 until the G chassis.
Also, Rheingold 3.51 is the latest (standalone bootlegged ISTA ) that had the test plan functions fully functional.

Get Rheingold ISTA-D 3.51 if you want a hassle free system.

How exactly is 3.51 the latest?

See how I left a clause after the part about the latest?

Ah...I think "last" would've been more appropriate , but yeah I see.
Well, I couldn't really find a 3.51 torrent, but I just finished downloading 3.56 and might give that a try.

3.56 is also "ISTA+", see top left. I haven't had luck with any of the ISTA+ versions.

And you are right, "last" would have helped comprehension.

Good catch on the "ISTA+", I didn't know if it made any difference. I downloaded a few different versions and will install each one to see how it functions. I'm gonna look again for a 3.51 torrent; if you have one, please share.

Okay, so I've been testing these setups and haven't really gotten anywhere. Here are my results:
I completely erased and removed the ISTA/D + ISTA/P from my computer and installed everything from fresh.
I reinstalled 4.01.21 just to see if anything changed.
This is me manually entering in a car, then using the Text Search under Vehicle Management>Repair Maintenance:
523i shows VANOS ABL's
M5 shows VANOS ABL's
My M5 with VIN entered shows VANOS ABL's
However, actually plugging in my M5 makes the ABL's not come up in the search at all!
Then I installed 3.51.13 (thanks 328 Power!) and it's pretty much doing the same thing.
Searching for VANOS on 3.51 doesn't even show any ABL's:
I installed the 7.3.0 patched .msi file and all it did was give me a connection error in both ISTA and even INPA. So I deleted it and installed 7.3.0 from standard tools 2.12 and everything started working again. I still have both ISTA's, just changed the name of their folders (Rheingold and Rheingold1), I switched the folder names depending on which version I used. ISTA 3.51 is super slow compared to 4.01 btw!
But I'm back at square one, VANOS test still isn't working. What else could be wrong? I should have the same setup as 328 Power but mine doesn't work and his does.

I will have to find a list of all the .net and C++ redistributions you need to have installed... I wonder if it's that instead.

Oh, and the patched ediabas is ONLY good with BimmerBoy88's ISTA P Loader.

1. Install .Net Framework 4.6.1 version and up, from http://www.microsoft.com
2. Install Java.
3. Download and install the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010/2013 Redistributable Package x86/x64 from http://www.microsoft.com for your language in Windows.
*** for computer with x86:
- vs90_piaredist
- vcredist_x86_2005
- vcredist_x86_2008
- vcredist_x86_2010
- vcredist_x86_2012
- vcredist_x86_2013
- vcredist_x86_2015
*** for computers with x64:
- vs90_piaredist
- vcredist_x64_2005
- vcredist_x64_2008
- vcredist_x64_2010
- vcredist_x64_2012
- vcredist_x64_2013
- vcredist_x64_2015
If the system is x64, vcredist must install and x86 and x64, otherwise not start Rheingold.
4. Install Ediabas 7.3
5. Unblock archive if necessary. It is important to not skip this step! Unblock file, uncheck Attributes - Read-only. Then unzip.
6. Unzip to any directory, for example: C:\Rheingold, D:\Rheingold, E:\Rheingold..., C:\Program Files\, C:\Program Files (x86) - this folder for 64bit computers. You can run from USB stick too.
7. Unzip and copy SQLiteDBs in Rheingold\SQLiteDBs\
8. Add additional languages if necessary in SQLiteDBs
9. Start RCleaner. Run as administrator.
10. Apply ISTA-D Reg Fix bit for your system from the Tools folder.
11. Start Rheingold (...\Rheingold\TesterGUI\bin\Release\ISTAGUI.exe) Run as administrator.
12. Enter the license key from the license.txt, if ask.
13. Enter 1 in the field of ISIS, ignore the error.

What does not having .net and C++ redistributions stop? I have some/most of them (I'll get you a list in a moment), but I can open ISTA and everything seems to work?

Here's what I have on my Win7 x86:
- - - Updated - - -
Just downloaded and installed everything on that list (I had Java 8 update 40 in the last pic)
Now the ABL's don't show up in the search when I look up my VIN. Pictured is 4.01, but is the same with 3.51
Seriously don't know what's going on. Going to plug it into my car right now and see if anything's changed on the DMS screen.
- - - Updated - - -
Yeah, dms screen is the exact same. Doesn't give me a next option

The ABLs only show up after doing a full vehicle test, including FASTA data reading. Not just VIN search, actual on car diagnostics.
You are doing that?

Yes of course, I wouldn't be able to get into the dms ABL if I didn't do that.

Okay I fixed this by using ICOM. Bought one 2 weeks ago and have been using it everyday.
ISTA has no way of seeing KL15 and KL30 voltages without ICOM, I don't know how I missed this for so long, but it's the reason why it wouldn't let me continue into the DMS screen. Version doesn't matter, I'm running on 4.04.12 right now

ICOM is the greatest thing ever. I haven't touched my old cables since getting mine. For those on a budget, voltage simulator tools exist to fill in kl15 and kl30 values for K+DCAN cables. I highly suggest the free NODE Voltage Tool. Feel free to PM if you want info.
