2003 BMW e39 540i M-Sport w/ 6-Speed
2003 BMW 540i, M-Sport, 6-Speed
Black Sapphire Metallic / Black Leather Interior
Mileage - 103,xxx
This is number 1124 of 1190 6-speed M-Sports.
Located in San Diego, California. Enthusiast owned.
Selling because my new residence has a small tandem garage, need a smaller car! The pictures and maintenance records speak for themselves but i am available to answer further questions
Please note that this car comes with a NEW YORK STATE title that is free and clear in my name. I moved 2 years ago and opted not to have a new title issued. The car is currently registered and insured in California. I will have a smog inspection done for any California based buyer.
I purchased this car in 2013 and prepped it for a cross-country drive from NY to San Diego, CA, It has been my daily driver since. I am very meticulous about my cars and keep them to a extremely high standard. The engine performs great, does not leak and does not burn any oil in-between 5k mile Mobil1 0w40 oil change intervals. Surprisingly quick for a 4-door sedan also. The 6-speed transmission shifts without drama and the clutch feels great.
Black Sapphire Metallic exterior in great condition, body is straight with no issues. A few door dings on passenger door consistent with mileage. Has OEM trunk lip spoiler. Original M-Parallel wheels in good condition with minor curb rash.
Excellent condition black leather interior. Factory retracting sun shades for the rear windows, full power and heated front seats, factory DSP premium audio. Dynavin N6 audio / navigation unit adds navigation and Bluetooth. Never smoked in.
Mechanically the best maintained 540i you will find. Continental DWS tires @ 60% tread. Thousands of dollars spent in the last 2yrs/15k miles to make this car completely trouble free. Records and receipts going back to 2009. Needs absolutely nothing! Oil changes with Mobil1 0w40 every 5k miles. Cold AC, auto-leveling HID headlights, solid suspension. Recent maintenance includes;
Complete cooling system overhaul (every single part..radiator, expansion tank, hoses, fan clutch..etc), valve cover and timing cover gaskets, refinished valve covers, new belts/tensioners/pulleys, power steering lines, timing chain tensioner, all 4x front control arms, 4x O2 sensors, rebuilt shift linkage, transmission mounts, battery, fuel pump, HVAC resistor, intake manifold gaskets, PCV valve, smog pump and much more. Clutch, alternator, engine mounts and starter done within past 25k miles.
Minor modifications; M5 shift rod (shorter throws) with ZHP shift knob, M5 rear sway bar, M5 subframe braces, Piano black kidney grills, 35% tint all around.
I am the 3rd owner. CarFax does show an accident which occurred in 2004, the previous owner stated that the car was side swiped on the right side. This car does come with a clean title. I do not know the extent of the damage but can say that there is absolutely no sign of it.
Last of the great BMW sport sedans before they became over complicated and bloated. 4.4L V8, 290bhp, 340ft-lbs, surprisingly quick with broad powerband, still gets 25+mpg highway!

Its tough to price this car because there is such a small pool of them to compare to get an idea of market value. I did adjust (lower) the price a small amount but to me atleast i think its fair pricing. As mentioned, yes your coming up on E39 M5 pricing but most of those cars i saw a few nights ago were 120k+ miles and not much mention of service work. Any M5 i would personally consider buying was pushing $16-17k. Compare long term costs of the 540i vs the M5 also. A lot of the same issues, but the M5 you add on rod bearings and the more complex vanos. The rod bearings are a one time expense, $3k and never worry about it for the life of the car. But still that is just additional running costs. The 540i you have timing chain guides, also a one time cost but not nearly as much cost wise to fix. Vanos is infinitely cheaper on the M62 vs the S62 though.
With enthusiast cars like this i feel you are buying the car, but more so you are buying the previous owner. Trust me when i say i am the type of person you want to buy a car from... .

Your price is fine. I just sold my 03 540 M Sport for 13k with detailed records. People can't seem to keep up with market price, and quite frankly long time enthusiasts can be some of the worst at being realistic.
