Hey, new here and I have only owned my e21 for a short period of time. Not doing a full restoration as so much trying to stop the rust rot and keep it alive. Long story short I have pretty much tried every parts vendor in the US to get a new Trunk Lid gasket and everyone has said "Maybe in 12 months". I figure at this point I will be trolling the Euro forums to find a new one or might get lucky and find someone who has one in a box on a shelf. Worst case in the short term I will just make my own. Suggestions and ideas welcome.
Have you tried bavarian autosport? http://www.bavauto.com/fland.asp?par...flKxoCuh_w_wcB

Welcome to the forums ToastBol
Trunk leaks with E21s are common, I have fixed a couple of mine by clear fully scraping the old gasket out and reusing it after patching the rust spots/holes in the body.

I will be doing this to my 81 run-about soon as the trunk fills with water when it rains or I hose it off.

Www.Eeuroparts.com claims to have it also, www.fcpeuroparts.com . I think they're pretty much the same company. The brand of gasket, URO, has had some complaints though, specifically in the door seals department. Then there's www.wallothnesch.com for, typically, genuine BMW parts.

Oh yeah and, my leaks are actually originating from the rear windshield gasket being badly worn. However, a good trunk seal should carry that water over and out instead of IN the trunk.
At this point I've tried BavAuto, Pelican, Turner and even BMW USA and all said the same thing. Now I did not think of wallothnesch.com though should have but I don't think I have them bookmarked in my BMW folder (do now!). I'll check out Eeuroparts.com as well. Needless to say the old gasket is in chunks if not fully missing at this point -
This is where I got mine:

All of the ones I mentioned Have it back ordered as well. In the mean time, you might try some inexpensive universal ones from eBay or amazon. They go for $5-8 a meter or something. This one has good reviews but, none of the people actually used it on their trunks.

And mobile tradition is worth a shot.

I have one new in the package which I bought maybe a year and a half ago, shortly after acquiring my car because the corners were separated on the original. I decided not to mess with the replacement at this time since the original was really not that bad (~50k mile car stored indoors in a climate controlled garage most of its life) so there it sets. I was just going to keep it, but if someone else really needs it...
The thing was stupid expensive so I'm not going to take a bath on it but PM me if you're interested.
Later,
Wally

I just check availability in "ATLAS" which is BMW's parts location worldwide, It is not available anywhere right now but is not listed as NLA.
These show with a estimated arrival in the fatherland of 10/13/16.
Order the part at your local dealer and it will show up.. eventually.

Dealer told me they had no ETA on the part so I cancelled. I actually had a friend in Europe looking for me one right now. If I get desperate I will try the home made route but this point would like to have an OEM to keep the water out.
Gasket sold to ToastBoi. Thanks guys.

Very interested in knowing what you do if you make your own. The design is just poor on the OEM.

Just received a trunk gasket that was on BMW back-order since October2016. $155.
buccatini - thanks for the update to this thread. Expensive for sure but it is really a good sign that BMW chose to restock this part. Unfortunately too many of the parts for our cars are going NLA...I really hope the recent trend of folks getting interested in E21's via BAT and other similar avenues keeps the parts supply viable for BMW Classic.

I ordered one from bavauto they told me 7 weeks but then it came in a week. I think they have them in stock
Local BMW dealer reports "7 available in the US and 27 in Germany". $180 each.
Get your orders in now! They'll be gone again soon.

The E28 and E24 gaskets are both the same thing, just longer. Cut one to the right size and glue the corners together with black 3M weatherstrip adhesive. Both are around $100 for BMW and $50 for "Uro" which is usually a garbage brand, especially for rubber parts. I haven't seen their trunk gaskets though.
Just got one from my dealer, so I'm guessing the US supply just shrunk a little.
Are there differences between early and late gaskets? I had a late one as a spare and it didnt look like it would fit my 78. If so, I have one for sale in used but whole condition.
I just picked up the e28 trunk gasket. It needs to be trimmed on basically all 4 sides, but should work out nicely. Just gotta fix the rust before installing it.
